Need help changing pickups covers on '62 avri jaguar

Greetings All!

Can someone tell me what to expect when changing the pickup covers on a '62 AVRI Jaguar? I'd like to replace the original off-white (vintage colored) ones with bright white covers, but its not clear to me whether the pickups are wax potted or not, and I don't want to screw anything up. For example, should I expect the old ones to easily slip-off or will they need to be heated and then re-potted?

Anybody?

They pop right off when the 2 mounting screws are removed. Unless you have some nasty gunk from over the years that somehow has made it's way into the pickup itself. Typically those white plastic covers will fall right off when the pickup is unmounted, leaving the coil and the metal "cage" thing that Jag pickups have around them.

Many thanks Londonbus!

I thought they'd pop right off too, but that wasn't the case, and it had nothing to do with the guitar being dirty or gunky. It ends up they were being held-on by the paraffin wax potting that had solidified between the inside of the covers and the windings themselves, but a slight amount of heat from a hair dryer did the trick. I simply warmed them up, slipped the old covers off and installed the new ones, and then reheated them slightly again to reset the paraffin.

The wax potting was at the heart of my initial concern. I knew the pickups were wax potted, but I was concerned about whether I might do damage to them somehow by liquifying with the wax with moderate heat. It'll be a while now before I get the entire guitar rewired again, so I can't yet say that all went well, but hopefully, I didn't damage anything with the two pickups. They were very nice sounding pickups and I'd be very upset if I screwed 'em up somehow.

Anyway, thanks again for your response.
