A tremendous effect. It can be overused to bad results. I couldn't see myself having a board without a wah. It can make a solo really sing. Not too much, but enough to add depth.

Lightbulb

In the 70s ,the only effect that I had was a Wah wah pedal, crybaby, used it for Sugar Mag and I would use it like for parked wah tones with my 59 Fender Esquire(which I wish I still had)

"Well I like how this wah sounds, but I could get an old crybaby for $40, I'll just do that, that'll be pretty much the same thing for less $$."

And then they hate the uninspiring Crybaby and write off Wahs.

I recently acquired a RMC-3FL, it is absolutely inspiring. Imagine trying every OD out there but they only had 1 knob (or zero), and then you got you got a KOT/Timmy/zendrive.

I just don't use them often. I can't justify that kind of space and money for something I so rarely use, and even when I do use it I normally don't HAVE to.

Interestingly (or not), I like wah after dirt. I think that just makes sense.

Jeff Beck sure made fine use of a wah on Trombone Shorty's tune "Do To Me". Warren Haynes uses one masterfully as well. Some material just demands you have a wah kind of tone, some doesn't - just like any other effect. When guys leave ANY effect on all night it makes me nuts, including reverb, delay, etc.

Personally, I prefer a filter just so I can trigger the thing with my picking hand as opposed to my foot.

Thumbs up

An envelope filter is great, have a Robotalk RI and the Hartman Envelope Filter is on the way, but it does not replace a good wah. Being able to a control the decaying sound of a sustained note or chord is a powerful thing.

Exactly! Former MC404 user here as of last week, got my RMC-3FL last week. Awesome wah pedal!

Two words: Kirk Hammet

Thanks to him, I can't stand it.

I do use a Q-zone for some filtration every now and then (much easier to deal with on a board too).

sounds like all the people that dislike them don't know how to use them right

your guitar probably has a volume knob, do you constantly do volume swells? just because you can pump the thing doesn't mean you should pump it over and over and over and over when you use it, the key is learning how to use it to focus on particular frequencies

if you like fuzz and never use a wah, you're missing out on something truly special

Exactly!!

From wikipedia: Schenker's main guitar for much of his career was a Gibson Flying V, which he typically played through a wah-wah pedal (used as a parametric equalizer to strengthen the "sweet spot"[1]) and Marshall amplifiers. His "unmistakable midrange tone"[1] emphasized by the partially engaged wah,[13] as exemplified on the song "Rock Bottom" from the UFO album Strangers in the Night, was listed among the 50 greatest tones of all time by Guitar Player magazine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Schenker

And what would "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" sound like without a wah!!

When used tastefully coolest fx ever. Can be subtle, can be over the top if u like and anything in between. I may use it once or twice in a night, but I still prefer to have one. Sometimes it's wah terror time and I try to ruin every song with wah.
