NEED HELP: EHX Caliber 22 noise
I have an electroharmonix Caliber 22 power amp. It's plenty loud and great idea for a back up as well as rehearsal amp.
The only problem I have is that is noisy - so much so that I have to resort to dialling the gain on my dirt pedals at a ridiculously low level. It helped it a bit but it's not entirely gone. I thought it was the power supply feeding off a power strip - plugged it in directly into a power point but the hum is still there. I thought it was because I have daisy-chained my effects before it (I have about 8 running off a 9v 1amp PSU) so I plugged directly into the Cal 22 - still the noise is there. I'm running out of ideas short of selling it - but I don't want to lose it because my modellers sound great into it and it's so convenient to bring instead of my tube amp to practices. EHX Cal 22 owners - have you had this problem? What did you do to overcome it? I need some help please.

And I also forgot to say that I am using a high quality speaker cable as well but the noise is still there.

Have you tried running it only at halfway or less? I think the noise you're hearing is the amp breaking up. So, if you keep the gain at less than half, you should be able to push it with relatively low noise while adding more volume from your other pedals. See this post for reference:

What load are you running it into? I doubt it can be be a cause for noise, but I believe EHX found out shortly after release the 22 and 44 need 8-16ohm loads, not 4ohm.
I have one, but I use it as a backup...which means hopefully I don't have to use it because it would mean an amp broke down. But when I have used it, I didn't notice noise from mine into 8ohms.

Mine was noisy (hum) with dirty power (easy to find in San Francisco). It only had a two prong plug afterall. EHX support said the hum was normal due to not being well grounded. I sold it for a 44 Mag and all was good. Too bad really as the 22 Cal has good tone and feel. Nice edge tones especially.

I had a similar problem with the PE60 and once I used a Planet Waves cable with only one grounded end, the problem went away.

What Planet Waves cable is that - speaker or instrument cable?

I am running it into a 2x12 at 16ohms as well as a 4x12 at 16ohms.
I've got the gain on my dirt pedal fairly low to take off the hum.

The noise is really a bother - the pedal, whilst practical and a great idea, is just frustrating for me. It's now up for sale.

Might do the same actually - and yeah the added headroom would be nice.

I was in the exact same boat and did the same thing. PLENTY of headroom with the 44. I'd consider a re-designed 22 as the tone and feel were fine. The noise was just unacceptable.

![]() They also make instrument cables as well with the same feature (one end is grounded and the other one isn't).

Thanks Jimmy - and you found this sorted out the hum issue with your EHX Cal 22?

I don't have a 22, I have a PE60. The cable took care of the noise. I would buy at least 2 of their guitar cables to use them for that purpose to troubleshoot and one of their speaker cables. I was having issues connecting a Boss GT-Pro to PE60 and when I used 2 of the instrument cables, the noise went away.
I hope you get it sorted out
