In the meantime a line of angry residents had formed behind me. Everyone was wailing, tearing their clothes and gnashing their teeth in despair at the lack of service.

Tell you what, I'm glad I don't live in that building.

You think that's bad. I went into my home bathroom and there was no o e there to hand me towel and offer me cologne. WTF?

Both times the attendants came running with this mortified look on their face that screamed "Sir, you are not certified to operate that equipment!"

Kind of funny...
I love it - "certified" to pump gas!

I remember a couple years ago that drivers were, according to law, not allowed to pump their own gas in Oregon.
Its the only reason my crazy ass cousin in OR could keep employed..

The worst thing about self service is that when I wash my windshield, I then have to get into my car and point to it and say "You missed a spot!" Then I have to get out and clean it while grumbling under my breath what a douche that guy is.

Yep, I worked pumping gas a little when I was a youngster.

It's even full service in Cambodia. I'd gladly tip someone to pump my gas!

Yup. I'd been on a camping trip and "plum fergot" about the law and started pumping my own gas in Oregon (we'd been by the White Salmon River, Washington that morning and crossed the Columbia) and the attendants "rescued" me from my undertaking. :^)

Sorry!

Some funny one liners in this thread. Strange though, I think I'd completely forgotten about somebody other than me filling the tank. Grew up in a small country town in Victoria, Australia and when I was younger I remember the attendants filling up for the folks but those days seem to be long gone here. Jeez, they've even got robot self service tellers at supermarkets here now and people actually queue up for them.

Seems that way. It really does grind my gears. I think I'm the grumpiest old man, 22 year old getting around, but I just see "us" slipping into a culture where nobody knows how to have a conversation anymore and the social norm is to just walk around like robots grunting at each other. Don't get me started on people running into each other while they're texting or faffing about on their Ipads.

I was once in Oregon and got out to pump my gas, the gas station dude about broke my arm trying to stop me!

Here in Nevada, we pump our own unless we want to spend more to have someone else do it for us.

Yep, self service stations is one of the signs of a society in downfall.

I'm from Jersey and it's funny for me because I guess they went to full service since they don't want the average Joe handling gas (which is highly flammable and deserves much respect). I understand but, I refuel jets, so gas station attendants are untrained bottom feeders to me. Took a little getting use to letting them mess with my car.

I drove through New Jersey for the first time ever a few weeks ago. I was perplexed by the no-self-service gas station. I felt strange getting out, swiping my card at the pump and watching some other guy squeeze the handle and fill up my tank. It was the first time in my adult life I could remember someone else pumping my gas and I didn't like it. it is so easy to do that it is not really the kind of the thing I need someone else's help with.

That's the thing, it isn't full service. It's some guy I don't want touching my car, money or credit card doing it for me. Full service used to mean they would get your gas, clean your windshield, check your oil, etc. It was worth paying for.
