To me David Lee Roth was a decent rock singer... but even when VH first began I couldn't take him. He always seemed to be over the top too much for me I guess.
I much prefer Sammy.... I like his singing and I thought they all worked well together when that band was in it's "happy" period. Shame... hmm... I think I will put on some VH as a matter of fact... :-) |

For the record, I totally agree that "Live Without a Net" is phenomenal.
I do wish they'd left out "Only One Way to Rock" though, I can't stand that tune

The 5150 tour was fantastic and the band was on fire. Sammy, on that tour, totally rejuvenated Ed and Al and you could see/hear it in their performances...yeah, he won me over. Eddie's performance on the song 5150 (in Live Without A Net) is phenomenal and one of my favorites.

I was thinking about this just the other day when a classic rock station in town played a song from the Roth days then the Hagar days.
To me: Roth = party / sex / drinking / have a good time songs Hagar = More serious, focused, get a message out songs I think both have their place, Roth is fun but can get annoying and Hagar does not have all the energy Roth has/had |

Hagar doesn't have the energy Roth had?
Are you kidding me? Seriously? Hagar NOW atg 60 something...Still sings better and puts on a better show that DLR can. TONS more energy. AND can hold a pitch!!!!

^ yeah, Hagar's energy is pretty high, no doubt about it. I also approve of his 80s-era neon outfits. And he's a good singer. I think the main reason people dog him is the songwriting, he just strays too far into the seas of cheese quite often.
But even the much-maligned "OU812" has several great tunes. I like all 3 hit singles from that record. "Finish What Ya Started" and "Feels So Good" are the best Hargar lyrics in my view. It's like he actually sat down and said "you know what, I need to make sure there aren't any lazy throwaway cheeseball lines in these tunes."

As noted above, to me the big advantage Roth had over Sam was his clever lyrics/vocal lines and the fact that his voice and the way he used it is one of a kind. Nobody really sounds like Dave. Sammy's lyrics were much cheesier and his voice though strong is clearly more generic sounding. Backups were also much cooler when Roth was at the Wheel. As far as the music goes Ed wrote killer stuff during both eras though his lead playing was far more fiery and tasty in the early years. I enjoy listening to both Era stuff but the Roth records are just magical.

Maybe you're thinking of Robt Plant? In the lyric dept., Sammy is and always has been a lightweight. Roth is way deeper, especially on the latest CD, IMO. S. j

These Roth/Hagar threads are humorous and irritating at the same time. Here it is, I like both. There are things about both guys I could do without. Roth is unlistenable live, and they can never do a live DVD without *replacing* the lyrics. Hagar tried IMO to *be* Roth in the early years. Much of his lyrics are cheese, but I tell ya, much of the the EVH/Hagar collaboration was *magic*. That said, his lyrics ruined the Chickenfoot CDs for me.
I know I won't change any minds, but take each for what they is. There's no winners here. Just losers: the guys slagging on someone else. Oh yeah, bring Mike back! Just kidding, that ship (and argument) has sailed.
