Pete Fornatale

For those in the Tri-State area, we lost a legend of progressive rock radio. Pete was one of the original DJ's on WNEW-FM, 102.7 in NYC. Which, beginning in 1967, arguably may have been the first station in the country to play "Album Oriented Rock". If you were an artist trying to break into the US market, you had to make your way through the doors of 102.7 or you may as well pack up and go home.

For those who don't know of Pete, goole him. You will be amazed at his legacy.

Loyal listener here in the day to WNEW 102.7, then one day it was just gone. WFUV is my favorite radio station right now, Pete's style will be sorely missed.

He's probably hanging out with Scottso right now.......

He was cool, I learned a lot about great music on that station in the 70's.

Loyal WNEW listener as well. I remember WNEW back in the days of Allison Steele and Roscoe. Sad news about Pete Fornatale. His unique musical style as a DJ and his interesting personality made that station one of the great rock FM stations of it's time . Rock on Mr. Fornatale !

Growing up in Brooklyn in the 70's Pete, Vin, Dennis and Richard and the rest of the WNEW team turned me on to so much great music. Having Dennis, Pete and Vin back on FUV has been great, and they continued to turn me, and now my teenager kids, onto great new music.

My best Pete memory is him introducing Steve Forbert at a solo acoustic show in a student lounge at Queens College in 1978. Two years later Steve Forbert was selling out the Palladium.

He was still great on FUV - which is great radio station. I always try to mention it in the "There's no good music on the radio" threads.

I always wondered how to spell his last name - Fornatell? Now I realize he was Italian - it just was pronounced in a very American way.

Pete was a great guy. Loved music. loved the people of NYC.

Anyone remember scottso's lunch time rock blocks? I remember the themes always being a bit pervy. Like zz top - tube snake boogie, tush, and pearl necklace. I always found that kinda stuff priceless
