That's not to say that it isn't fun to chase your favorite guitarists rigs and set-ups. I'm even a big enough geek that I own a couple "relic" guitars that my friends make fun of from time to time. I love doing this too, and having a similar rig to a guitarist you'd like to emulate can certainly help you get there, but it is tough to say this muff or that muff will get you sounding like him. Any good quality muff can fit the bill in the right hands.
:-)
I like you, Mr Cuff. I think I'll buy one of your pedals.

I tried the BoW, CWM and an original green Tall Font Muff (v1 or v2, and I understand that v1 is identical to the original Civil War Muffs (yes, I know that they varied in components and hence tone)) side by side into my old Hiwatt. I ended up selling the CWM. It just lacked some bottom and "fullness" for me to compete with the BoW and the old Sovtek. It is a great pedal, don't get me wrong, but the BoW sounded better imho, and pretty much identical to the old Muff.

I had the VRH and was a nice pedal, but ended up selling it. I currenty own a W&C TFR and it is just fantastic and perfectly balanced. I'll also buy the Tri Pie 70 whenever I get the chance.

I am so glad to hear this. I had been on the waiting list for the SUF CWM for a period of time that got extended an additional 4 weeks. I didn't want to wait any longer so I bought the BoW off one of the members on the forum. I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision. Your post confirms this for me. The characteristic trademark of Muff's that settles it for me is the huge sound that they produce. The BoW is incredible at this. I have never used the SUF (which is probably also a great pedal) but now I don't need to feel that I had cheated myself in this decision.

Wren & Cuff Caprid vs. SUF

Just to echo Matt's words from Wren & Cuff...

You need only spend a few minutes on Kit Rae or Bjorn Riis' Gilmourish sites and hear them play sound clips through dozens of muff variants, and guess what....they ALL sound like Gilmour!! Why??? Because Kit and Bjorn have taken the time to learn HOW TO PLAY LIKE GILMOUR!!

Also, keep in mind that the pedal is only one element of the signal chain. It needs to compliment the rest of YOUR gear, which may be different from Kit's or Bjorn's and most certainly from Gilmour's.

In MY personal rig, I find the Caprid gets me closest to "the tone", and I have used the SUF VRH, BYOC Large Beaver, and Costalab Sun Drive...all very fine pedals.

So find the muff that suits YOU!

I have owned a few pedals from each builder and the I've ended up keeping one from each. I still have the SUF Violet Ram's Head and the Wren and Cuff Box of War. Those were my favorites. I like the VRH for higher gain tones and the BoW for a rawer, grittier lower-gain tone. I just love the frequencies the Bow accentuates, it is the one I usually go to for Muff tones, but I keep the VRH because I sometimes need higher gain Muff tones for projects I get hired for.
I think builders are great, and it is going to depend on which tones you prefer. As far as aesthetics, the W&C wins easily.
