The hall gets paid

Why should we play for free.
This is how I see it. With rare exceptions, music isn't free.

Whoa, back to the stage, the cats...errr... audience is getting restless.

Our band is a non-profit corporation with around 100 members. Everyone in the band is a CEO, CFO or own their company. Many of us were professional musicians when we were (much) younger, and this is an opportunity for us to have fun. There are usually 30 musicians at each gig, so we plan our setlist according to who commits for a gig. We play at two or three charitable events per month - we charge only for the sound guy.

We are a bunch of 40-60 year old dudes and gals who want to be kids again, and we rock!

Funny ... that's what I've always said ...
Professional Musicians who move their own gear
actually get paid for "hard labor" not the music ... lol

Living here in Bakersfield and having an acoustic band that plays mostly Dead and Hot Tuna genre tunes, we pretty much are practicing in public. In other words, we don't have to pay for rehearsal space.

Our last gig at an Egyptian restaurant was classic: no air conditioning, smelled like poo, toilet backed up in men's restroom, ten people eating in a room that held 75.They gave us free water with ice. That was it.

We stopped early, packed up, and I did an online health department report for the restaurant after I got home.

Never.

Not even for charitable events. We may make a separate contribution as an individual/individuals or possibly negotiate our set rates slightly if we have a particular interest, but a gig is never free.

It's the people who give it away that are helping to kill live music - I'm not kidding. I've also had conversations with plenty of bar/club owners who will gladly pay a DJ or a Karaoke guy a couple of hundred bucks, but would never slot a free band.

If it's for free, it isn't a gig.

Our last gig was for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. There were 12 kids there who will not see their next birthday. They danced with us on stage.

Never, you say?
