JS Moore custom wind humbucker.

For some reason, the last few years I've been partial to Ed's 1984, 5150 and LWAN tones which all seems to have a "strattier" tone to some of the tracks, crispy highs and cleans up incredibly well when he brings down his volume pot, not as full and meaty as the earlier tones, but it's got a certain "something" I love.

Now for fun I had Jon Moore at www.tonefordays.com wind my a custom humbucker with very mismatched coils, the humbucker came out at sligtly over 11k, with the coils wound 4k/7k.

There's this story about EVH's pickup being broken with one coil working, that was what I shooting for somewhat here.

The build is top notch, he doesn't take money up front, you pay when the pickup is ready for shipping, that's how it should be done IMO. The wait was just under 4 weeks for the build.

Now for the tone, pretty much spot on for what I wanted, it's crisp yet full, and cleans up better than any humbucker I've tried so far. As the coils are very mismatched there's a little hum of course, but that doesn't bother me at all. Alnico 5 magnet.

Here's a quick Best of Both Worlds clip, sounds nothing like the original(5150 III 50watt), but you get the idea...

And this custom wound pickups was only $95, a hell of a deal.

Highly recommended custom winder.

Not bad. The tone has a lot of that Stratty clarity and hollowness of tone that a really like about some VH tracks.

Thank you, pretty much exactly what I hoped to achieve with this custom wind.

What kind of guitar and guage of strings were you using? Set-neck gibson scale or bolt-on strat scale? (betting the latter, but you never know)

It's this 83' Kramer Pacer Special with 009-042 Ernie Balls. Bolt on for sure

Poplar body, tone control disconnected.

George L 20 foot cable. 5150 III 50watt amp, EVH 2x12 cab. Sennheiser e906 mic (dead center on the speaker) , Line 6 UX1 sound interface. Added a bit of delay and reverb in Pod Farm , recorded into Audacity. Duplicated the recorded track and added 7 cents worth of pitch shifting, panned the tracks hard left and right.

Not exactly a hi-end recording setup, but this amp records well for sure.

I love Jon's stuff, most of the sound clips I've done were with slightly mismatched coil humbuckers from Jon in a Squier Supersonic.

Jon lives a few minutes from me and had done some rewinds for me.
Great guy knows his stuff and is into tone.
Best part he's not a flake.
He delivers.
