also,, the only way.imho is to crank the amp up till the speakers air are moving your pants. back in the day this is how you played. simple ,yet loud. so if our looking for that plexi tone ,,,,,thats the only way it works.but intodays stages that aint going to happen.people are looking for that wide open plexi tone, but at low volumes. lots of amps close but not the same.thats why all the low wattage amps.i must have a good ear for tone ,cause i can nail ev tones with rockitt amps /marshall head. splawns were just to easyto get every era of ev tones.weird that your having a hard time coping his tone. guitar /and the person playing it has alot to do with tone to.anyway give kev a call .....

Good plexi with the right pedal can also get you there.

A little off-topic, but few people talk about it, so here goes. I was listening to RUSH Caress and 2112 today (trip to my tech... again...!), and both albums are full of GREAT plexi tones. It's fun to hear Alex's progression throughout his Kings, Hemispheres, Waves, and MP tones though. In many ways, he peaked over that period. Such a great player in his own right.
hey on the off topic,,, i think his marshall days sounded way better than his hh amps.

I agree! 2112, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres were when Rush were at their best!

IMHO, tone chasing is a dead end street...You might get in the ball park, but in the end, you'll still sound like you...

Now that I think about it, the tone in the first few moments of Limelight is glorious.

the Plexi amp is one of the best if not THE best Platforms for so many great things. Your own tone being one of them.
The Variac, the mic, mic placement, the speakers, the pickups, yes the echoplex, the level it was recorded, the amp itself, his fingers and some luck.
There is nothing wrong with hitting the front end of that amp with whatever it takes to get you there. there were tons of great sounds made that way.
IMO way cooler than modern pre-amp based MV amps.
The coolest sounds ever recorded were guys taking simple amps and pushing them beyond what they were supposed to do (Iommi, May, VH...just to name a couple)
Eddie loved Clapton...his biggest influence. Clapton had killer tone...but Ed sounds nothing like him.
The old style Marshalls are such a great place to carve out something of your own, and still be somewhat familiar...
I guess if you really need to sound like Eddie...go to the modded Marshall camp. Rockstah etc. You'll still probably sound like you

I recently placed an order with Kevin however I'm still thinking about a nice cab to pair with it. Avatar Vintage 212 openback loaded with Celestion G12-65 Heritage speakers looks like a strong contender; however I'm open to suggestions.

Try taking the back off your cab.. See what it sounds like before you do anything hasty. Give it a bit of time, Then go from there..
That's a nice amp... you wanted a 68 Plexi you got it!

The reason I say this is because that amp totally overwhelmed my cab and speakers. Removing that back panel could make the difference.
