Compressor necessary?

Hi, I play in a metalcore/hardcore/metal band. We play songs similar to ones made famous by the likes of Bullet for my valentine, Trivium, Metallica etc. I planned on buying a compressor for my board but I was wondering is it really necessary? I dont need to boost cleans (I dont think) because I use chorus/accoustic sim on them, and I cant see it making much difference to the overdrive. What do you think?
