Am I the only one who likes to use different picks?
Currently I am using the red Dunlop Jazz pick. I like it for picking accurate passages if the song/genre calls for it. But I find myself disliking its stiffness for strumming, so I cut down a different pick to the same shape with a thinner, more flexible feel.
Does anyone out there use different picks for different things? |

I just use the Dunlop Jazz III exclusively for electric...

I like the smaller think e.g. Jazz III for picking, but like very thin Claytons for strumming. The compromise I use is a Big Stubby 1MM

I also like the jazz III for lead playing..those stubbies are good too. I prefer a more traditional size pic for my powerchording..Oh well, seems life is a compromise.

Either fingers or a standard Fender Heavy for me. Life is complicated enough.

I still prefer the black Dunlop Nylon 1.0mm, works equally well for strumming, single notes, and hybrid picking for me.
I do want to try the Eric Johnson Jazz III picks though, as they supposedly resurrect the original red Jazz III design. I also want to try stone picks - one of splatt's enduring legacies I guess. |

I use different picks from time to time as they sound different and as you've noticed one shape can make somethings easier than another. But at some point you should pick one that you can do everything on, IMO. As with everything in guitar playing, you have to make a compromise- it's going to be pretty hard to switch picks to go from a fast single note passage to a hard strumming rhythm in the middle of a tune.

I have a little pouch on my key chain in which I carry 5 different kinds of picks. I would carry more but they won't fit.

These days I keep medium and heavy gauge Fenders in my pocket for a couple of reasons: depending on how I feel that day, one or the other is a better choice. Other reason: sometimes I get in a volume no man's land: amp's too loud and I can't dig in, turn it down and I have to beat the strings which kills all dynamics, can't dial in the middle ground. The pics can help out with that (less or more string output).

i like to use 1.5 for electrics, and 1.0 (or less) for acoustics. to me it sound better that way, but then again i generally use fingers and pick when playing both.

Green Tortex for me. I believe in keeping a base level of constants. On the other hand, I occaisonally play with a guy who has a different pick strategically placed between each pedal on his pedal board. I was waiting to start a tune when I found him picking up each one and sizing it up for the task at hand.:NUTS
He's a well known obsessive in the circles I move in. I can't say I admire his approach. Last edited by Joe Robinson; 03-23-2008 at 01:18 PM. |
