Reamp Fun - Digital Hardware, Software, and Analog Re Amp with Angus's Clip
There's been a lot of bandwidth expended over thousands and thousands of posts here on this forum alone; let alone the Internet about how this sounds better than that.
One of the factors that makes it all insane is that you have thousands and thousands of guys with different levels of skill and completely different rigs and completely different tastes all doing them. Well, Eric (Solo-Act) was brave enough to put his Fractal Audio Axe-FX up to the task of recreating someone's rig if they provided a raw direct clip in addition to a recorded one. Not many stepped up to the challenge; but Flyin'Angus did. His clips and playing are among the best out there. Angus has given his permission for this to happen. Now at least we can remove part of the variable and supply everyone that participates with the same performance, same dynamics, same starting point. The results should show off the capabilities and possibilities of different approaches and tastes. Put on your producer's hat and have some fun. That thread spawned an idea of mine that Angus agreed to. He provided me the full blown 24 bit wave file of the direct recording. I put it up on Mediafire for folks to download and then we can have some fun re-amping it through different setups and post them up and compare. This is a fun exercise, not a bash and flame thread. I will ride this thread to make sure that it does not turn ugly; so please don't test me on that. The goal here is take the original file, run it through YOUR rig and post the results. Folks can hear a Line 6 vs. Fractal vs. Vox vs. Waves vs. Guitar Rig vs. Eleven vs. analog. I am hoping that guys with tube amps will also get in and drop some takes on this too - the idea is to sort of taste test what can be done. Just be forthcoming with what you are using, be detailed and keep in mind that it is less about simply matching Angus's Bogner and more about showing off and having fun with what you can do. I think it could prove to be one of the most interesting threads/exercises we've ever had on TGP. Let's get to it!! http://www.mediafire.com/?ettnjtzhyzi

Scott, please post up your take on varying flavors with your Axe-fx. I'm waaay less concerned with duplication than possibilities! Great thread.
Thanks, Josh |

Id like to hear it through something of a modied Marshall tone. Something around the George Lynch "Back for the attack" tone, or a slightly hotter, more saturated brown sound. Either would clean up nicely.

I've already got SLO, HellBeast, and DasMetal versions. Clips coming this weekend. Maybe I'll do a "metal-disco" version, or something completely bizarre but musical.
Glad you picked up the torch. Kinda like a "re-amp camp". It's so easy to do I think this thread will get packed with clips.

I wanted to do this with pedals and amps a while back but there wasn't any interest. I'd love to play with this one, but my recording computer got the blue screen of death. If I figure out how to make it work before the thread dies, I'd love to play.

I'll tackle this tonight if I have time! Sounds fun. Downloading it now.

I just listened to the dry d.i. clip- I should point out-
the d.i. clip is clipping (the mic pre/di, or the recording software??) a bit- which will be amplified A LOT by re-amping through the axe-fx or anything else. Might be tough to get rid of the flubby bottom... I'll still try it out later

I will try to digitaly "clean it up" and will post a "cleaned up version" unless there is a better version available. :BEER |

Yea, I am noting that too. If you have a clean version before I do, you can use Mediafire.com to host it for free.
Hoping I can bang some takes out of this in the next day or two. I think this thread, honestly, will be a tremendous asset to the recording community and set aside a lot of the questions so many seem to have about different 'things' that get questioned a lot.

I need a patch cable I don't have to re-amp. I have actually never done it before and need to get a cable. Next day or two for my try at this. Sigh.

Here's my "artist's impression" reamp. I didn't go for a clone of the close-mic'ed amp sound, so much as I tried to capture the feel that the clip conveyed to me and produce a clip that pleases my personal "tone sense."
FWIW, the apparent volume roll-on in the original, wet, clip is not reflected in a level change in the dry guitar track. Also, there's an obvious punch-in or splice in the dry track, with a noticeably brighter guitar sound after than before. I made some level changes in an attempt to recreate the volume roll-on, but I didn't do anything to deal with the splice. Edit: Well, duhh. The lead-in prior to the roll-on was so low in level that it looked like noise in my wave editor, and I cut it out. Clip now revised to contain the lead-in, and the patch cleans up nicely with no added encouragement from me. So here it is: http://jay-mitchell.com/XTCReamp.mp3 All amp sims and effects are in the Axe-Fx. Last edited by Jay Mitchell; 04-18-2008 at 06:26 AM. |

Here's a go at it. I wasn't aiming for the original tone, I was just seeing what kind of results I could get with software only. I was going for a "70's metal" sort of gain level and tone. It's not amazingly great, but it sounds better than I expected it would.
http://soundclick.com/share?songid=6469978 This is all Logic Pro, I spent maybe 30 minutes fiddling with a few amp sim settings and sticking on a touch of reverb. It's very entertaining and quite educational to see how changes to the amp sims affect the track overall. I think I'm going to see what else I can come up with... :BEER |

I did not want to "over do it" so that it will have as little effect on the original tone as possible. As with any process, it will have some effect on the tone even if you can't hear it on the dry guitar. I would say use this only if the clipping is bugging you a lot (like on cleaner settings) http://www.andras-shimon.com/TEMP/Re...tarCLEANED.wav :RoCkIn |
