Dickey Betts' Soldano
One of my two or three favorite tones has been Dickey Betts' early to mid '90s tone with the Allman Bros., especially on the official live releases. I always assumed that he did most of those shows with Marshalls through JBL speakers, as that's the "famous" Dickey rig. However, by the magic of youtube, I've found that he apparently relied much more on the Soldano SLO during this period.
Check this youtube vid and marvel at his tone (though they flub some of the harmony lines at the end): http://youtube.com/watch?v=G1jpQu6qR1E So I'm thinking all those great tones on An Evening . . . First Set (which I think is Dickey's high water mark in the Allmans) come from the Soldano. Does anyone know how he set this beast up? I'm guessing he played on the normal channel, but other than that, does anyone know? He appears to be using the JBL-loaded cab. The main reason is that the lower-priced offerings in Soldano's line mimic one or another channel of the SLO. I'm guessing that one could get Dickey's tone here with a reverb-o-sonic, a Les Paul, and a delay turned way down. Anyone know? |
