can't get hendrix tone without LOTS of noise

Trying to cop a Woodstock or BOG Hendrix tone. Running a JV strat > modded v847 wah > microvibe > classic 108 Fuzz > Badger 30. Sounds pretty close minus the talent and with tons of noise AND 60 cycle hum. How the hell did he do it?

I know the 60 cycle hum can be eliminated/reduced with noiseless pickups or the Suhr backplate but what about all the white noise? Even with my guitar volume on 0 it sounds like I'm gigging at Niagara Falls.

BTW I've tried a decimator noise reduction pedal which was great at reducing noise....and tone.

Agreed...his rig was out of control on a lot of the live stuff.

Yeah, he could rduce it in the studio with some clever mixing, but live it could be very pronounced. Learn to use your volume control alot.

Also, I use the microvibe too, and it may just be a noisy pedal. It running always causes the most noise for me.

move your pedals at least 15 ft from the amp
check your house wiring (when my refrigerator turns on, I get some extra noise)
do up the inside of your guitar w/ shielding paint

Jimi had the noise...he just delt with it...learn to do the same, it'll be worth it in the long run. No where near as easy as noiseless pickups or a noise gate but you'll be a better man for it in the long run!

I agree that a lot of his stuff was out of control e.g. Isle of Wight but when I watch/listen to Star Spangled Banner performed at Woodstock his rig actually sounds fairly quiet considering his signal chain and the volume he was playing at.

How are you powering your pedals? A pedal power 2 might help out, and maybe a furman conditioner.

There is a kinman noiseless pickup called the 'woodstock', maybe that will cop the tone.

Buy some Kinamns! Worked wonders for me!

I have the AVN Blues and they rock! No noise and ALL the tone. I've had the Woodstocks but I prefer the AVN Blues.

Check out my Youtube page (see my sig below)! I'm using the Kinmans in every Strat/pedal clip. Watch my London Fuzz clip in particular:

Note the COMPLETE lack of buzz and hum!!!

Using a pedal power 2 plus. Have not had any experience with a power conditioner.

Have not tried shielding.

pickup positions 2 and 4 are hum cancelling. This does not reduce the noise significantly. The noise is MUCH louder than the hum.

Turning volume on the guitar to 0 does not reduce noise significantly. It appears to be mostly from the pedals and amp.

Check all your cables between your effects and from amp to pedals and pedals to amp...thats often the cause of this type of noise...

Identify which component is causing the most noise.

The wah makes a lot of hiss in a toe down position. The microvibe makes a wooshing noise as it modulates. This then gets distorted and amplified by the fuzz and amp. Each effect is not too bad on its own but when they are all on together...

I think the reason I am able to 'approximate' the sound I am looking for is the same reason I'm getting all this noise. I love the sound but the noise is out of control. Can I have my cake and eat it too?

I'm sure Hendrix had to deal with noise with his signal chain but I don't hear it in his live recordings. I mentioned Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock in particular because it doesn't have drums, vox, bass etc... to mask the noise. There is a part of the performance when he actually stops playing (Right before "o'er the land of the free...") and you can hear some noise. But its not that loud.

Anyone else have a similar experience with their wannabe Hendrix signal chain?

Try moving the fuzz to the front of the chain.
