Thinking about getting a classical . . .

A traditional classical (no cutaway, wide neck, 650 mm scale length, probably cedar/rosewood).

What should I look at for under $1K? Under $2K?

Thanks!

I would suggest Trilogy Guitars as a place to check out:

http://www.trilogyguitars.com/www2/

They were recommended by my teacher and have a wide variety of instruments. You can go there and they'll have a bunch of guitars for you to play in privacy. They let me take three of them home and play them for a week. I really felt like I had time to suss out which guitar was right for me. They have both new and used instruments and am sure they would have something in your price range.

Between Trilogy and Guitar Salon, this area of town is rich with classical guitars, isn't it?

It seems to be. I never made it to Guitar Salon but I've checked out their website and they do have some nice guitars.

BTW, thanks for the recommending Leland at Westwood Music. He seems like a nice guy and I'm glad my guitar will be in good hands.

I have tried both Pavan's and Kenny Hill. The studio version Hills are a great bang for the buck. Sound and look great. Check out Gryphon Strings selection. They have a wide selection and will often talk you down to the lower price guitar if it fits your needs and sounds good.

I had Peter Tsiorba, an Oregon luthier, build me a wonderful Hauser model for around the top end of your price range. It's the lightest guitar I've ever held, sounds wonderful, and is a true handmade piece of art. Peter's an absolutely terrific guy to work with, and I'm extremely pleased with this instrument.

riffmeister mentioned well the brands I will look for (I'm in the same boat).
I will add the "New World" series from the same Kenny Hill... it's a made in China-setup in US series copying the best models out there. I tried one and they are very nice!
