Get me started on recording guitar to computer.

I've never done this at home.
I just need to be pointed in the right direction on what gear I will need for a cheap home set up.
Mainly this will be for reviewing gear.
Pretty much all I have are some Mics and a mixer.
Interface? Software?
Must be compatible with Vista home.

I've heard its not great for doing this stuff but its what I have.
Believe me if I could get a Macbook now I would.

Any help would be appreciated.

Derek

Doing a little more research Ive found that some people like Audacity, and its Vista compat.
I guess what I really need is an interface that works with Vista.

The computer and recording software are the least important part. Most important part is the monitor speakers - you have to be able to hear what you are doing. You will also need an audio interface. Firewire is a better choice than USB. Most interfaces come with recording software, like Cubase.

Next step are better mics, next step better mic preamps - but you won't need either to get started...

Thanks.
Well I'm looking to record my new amp an Orange Dual Terror. Maybe give a review. I want to mic up my cab and record to PC. Its seem like every Audio Interface I find doesn't work with Vista.
This is a fairly new CPU, I'm guessing it has the firewire plug ins.

I got a Lexicon Alpha from GC for about $100. I plug it into my vista box. Came bundled with cubase. I plug a SM57 into it. It goes into the computer through a USB cable. Seems to work OK.

If you don't know what Firewire ports and cables look like, you'll find images here.

If it's a modern machine, it may have Firewire 800, which is backwards compatible with Firewire 400. Most audio interfaces use Firewire 400.

Well I choose an audio interface.
What I really need to know is how would you synch a video to your recording you make with the amp?

Much like this guy does. Do you cut the audio from the camera and add your recording?

Not as elaborate as looping all of the tracks though.
