Howard Roberts - Super Chops?

What do you think of this book.

Appears to be out of print.

Page Hamilton talks it up on his instructional DVD, "Sonic Shapes".

It's an interesting approach to maximizing and organizing practice time.

The second great thing this book offers are some great soloing ideas over standard progressions. This is done through the solos being steady constant 8th notes. This means interest is generated through melody and placement of the melody in the 8th note scheme.

I don't do the practice routine, I just read the solos once in a while. I've memorized the first two solos, I'm sure I'm rusty on them.

Everything by Howard Roberts is great. I particularly like his book on Chord Melody.

I love it, and think it's a very helpful and unique approach. I've worked through the book a couple of times. But yeah, just the examples alone are worth reading/playing through. Also the tips and pointers in the beginning of the book are well worth reading, also (of course, IMHO).

It is out of print but the Jazz Guitar group on Yahoo has a pdf file of it that one can download.

I am surprised that a well put together resource from someone as well known and connected (GIT) would be out of print.

I hear ya, that perplexes me too.....

.....that might be my pdf circulating- I scanned each page and posted the pdf here once upon a time!

Everything HR published on teaching is great IMO.


I have the 3 PRAXIS: Guitar Compendium books. Wonderful stuff.

And I think "Sonic Shapes" is an HR Term.

I used to work at Cherry Lane. We published those various HR books. I suppose the public interest wasn't there anymore.

A couple of times I suggested reprinting them, but a no-go for whatever reason. I suppose the public interest wasn't there anymore and they ran their course, sales-wise.


I did grab a few copies that were headed for the bin when we moved offices though

Do you guys know if anyone has ever put together chord charts fro the project lessons? I have a tough time figuring out which chord voicings he is talking about, as I cannot read them. I'd love to go through the progressions and get them nailed down.
