What is happiness??

Hi Friends.

"Happiness is one of the things we never get enough of, no matter how much we have and no matter what definition we give it."

I never heard anybody pretending being happy an entire life. Moments yes, but not a lifetime. Perhaps that’s because happiness is such an intense feeling that no human body can sustain it for so long.

Please share your opinion.
Thanks.

I don't think anyone COULD be happy for a long time...it would be like a drug you form immunity to, if you were "happy" all the time, how would you know, it would just be the normal state of affairs...kinda "blah"...

I think the real trick is not to run from what you feel. Some people, when they realize they are happy, get worried...that it won't last. So they effectively self-regulate to not be happy. Other people seem to be able to live it up.

The best parties, (happiest time at parties) were the ones I didn't expect. The best times, were always the ones that came out of nowhere, and suddenly you just realize you are happy...joyful, content...

We need sadness, we need happiness. When my mom died, I think I went through it a lot better than I would have, just because I didn't "fight" the depression, sadness, ache of the loss. Instead I let myself feel it.

Folks ought to try not to be afraid of loneliness, boredom, sadness, just as they ought to get the most out of happiness, joy, thrill!

Some people are happy being miserable...I've seen it. When given a chance to quite that, they cling to it...it doesn't show up as happiness, they don't look happy, but they are...We all choose...

There are Talmudic discussions of wealth and wisdom that end as follows:

"Who is a wealthy man? He who is satisfied with what he has."

"Who is a wise man? He who learns from all men."

Using this formula, I would say a happy man is he who emphasizes the positive in all possible experiences.

I think Stomp and Jon are right.

Check this out, Jon. Not surprisingly, the Tao Te Ch'ing has a similar thought:

He who knows he has enough is rich.

I strongly believe happiness is independent to ones situation. Happiness is self referential. Happiness is peace.

If you are truly interested on some "expert" views, please read The Art of Happiness by HH the Dali Lama. Wonderful insight and easy reading.

Yes I agree. However I would be careful to say this so bluntly. There are many of us who don't or have not understood why this is. To such people it may contribute to feeling of sadness or inadequacy. To be empathetic to such individuals will demonstrate your own happiness.
