Low.
Volume always beats gain.

Between 4 and 6, depending on the level of rock

Ditto.

The first 3 are always ON for Dirt, and I use the Sovereign as a Solo Boost.

Mine is on 7 on my TSL602. It's on 10 on my 2203 100 watt. It's on 10 with my solid state Marshall. If I could crank my amps up louder I'd probably turn the gain down some.

On what?....this means nothing unless we know the amp.

At TGP people will give lower gain settings......on HC you will get higher.......
Some will just say lower but actually play with higher because Lower seems to be cooler and equates to being a better player....;-)

What kind of rock?
I keep my gain at a half-dirty setting where you can still hear the strings separated and some of the guitar's clean sound piercing through. Kind of a Kieth Richards amount of gain. Then I boost it with a Zendrive, a fuzz or whatever to get the heavy sounds.

I don't use amps with a gain knob. Only volume and its always all the way up.

+1 For any particular 2 channel amp/guitar combination its set for what I like for dirty rhythm. Then if necessary I hit the front with a clean boost for more gain or an EQ pedal in the loop for more volume or both....Bob

For classic rock using a Gibson Les Paul into a Reinhardt 18, the "4-6" setting as previously suggested is where I keep mine.
