I wouldn't even bring a car into Manhattan if I could avoid it. Take a train down from Fishkill and take the subway or cabs to wherever you want to go in the city.

Manny's no longer exists. It is now a Sam Ash. (they bought Manny's years ago)
But 48th street is still somewhat intriguing even though it is basically Sam Ash and Rudy's. Parking? Leave your car at home. Take a train in. Live like a real NYC'er. Take public trans or walk. Cars are a PITA and an expense. Unless you feel like paying a monthly fee or can get Big Blue to pay. Because trying to find spots and not get a parking ticket at $150 a pop is a hassel. A car is not worth the trouble if you are staying within Manhattan. Where to hang? Broad topic depending on taste. Hard to say. PM Me and I can pick your brain and point you in the right direction. |

East Village, the entire area near the Village Vanguard. Just walk around and stop into all of the shops. Seek out Generation Records for some cool cds. Spend time walking on Bleeker, West 4th Street, Washington Square Park. Hit McSorley's near Cooper Union, the oldest bar in the U.S.
Have fun!

If you're in downtown Manhattan, just start walking in any direction. It won't take you long to find something interesting.

That's kind of a broad question .... what would you like to do? Live music? Eat? Shop? People watch? Sight see?

I always drive into Manhattan, only because I know of one spot in the city in which I NEVER have trouble finding parking. It's my little secret. Of course, after I do that, I have to walk 10 mins, or cab/subway it anyway. But that's cheaper than the $30-60 it might cost to park in a garage. And when I leave, it's 10 mins out the door.

A few non-musical adventures that I'd highly recommend:
A (sunset) walk across the Brooklyn Bridge: the views are amazing, and you'll be surrounded by people from all over the world. The Museum of Natural History: a truly incredible experience Circle Line/Staten Island Ferry: The Ferry is the cheaper alternative to get out on water, but The CL is an awfully fun way to see the city, complete w/ a guided tour. Mermaid Day Parade/ July 4th Fireworks: If you're in town for either/or, they're both fun, if crammed with people. If you go to the parade and find that the crowds are too much, you can always take a walk down the boardwalk to Brighton Beach and have lunch/dinner at one of the outdoor Russian joints. Whatever you, do check both TimeOut (the weekly) and the Voice for all kinds of listings.

Head up to the NY Historical Society and see the Grateful Dead Archive while it's there (until early July). Lots of great eateries on the upper West side while you're there.
Spend a day at the Museum of Modern Art. Take a stroll through Central Park and check out Strawberry Field (and the Dakota). On the lower West side, take a walk along Highline Park, an elevated train route converted to a pedestrian-only park. It's wonderful! In the Village, be sure to poke your head in The Bitter End. Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Bill Cosby and many, many others got their start there (and me too!). Have an ice cream sundae the size of your head at Serendipity III in the East '60s (if you can afford to wait for a table). I watched Edgar Winter eat a foot-long chili dog there many years ago. Your choices are truly limitless! |

Matt Umanov guitas on Bleeker is cool, grab a pie at John's across the street. You don't need a car, public transportation is cheap, fun, and reliable.

![]() since you mentioned the Vanguard, i assume you want to catch some jazz. i'd personally recommend Smalls on 10th St... especially the late-night jam sessions. also might want to see who's playing at The Stone, John Zorn's space.

Stay as far away as possible. There's nothing to see here.
Unless you hate peace and quiet, stick with Fishkill!
