Tele question: how important is the neck pickup...

When you think the quintessential tele tone, do you instantly think of the bridge position? Or is the neck pickup equally important? The reason I ask is I often see teles with hums or mini hums in the neck position. I have the itch for some tele twang and am considering another type of pickup in the neck. Thoughts?
