Expression Pedal with DL4 Looper

Hey all, I tried searching but I couldn't find how an expression pedal functions with the DL4, specifically on the loop sampler setting. The only reason I'd get an expression pedal would be to control the mix level in the loop sampler - can it do this? Also, any cheap alternatives to the L6 one? The M-Audio seems to be a common choice...
