Which Rat for Frisell tones?

So does anyone know which Rat Bill uses?

I'm looking into getting my first rat.. but I'm not sure which models reign supreme. I know the new Proco stuff isn't too hot, or at least thats the word.

So which are some the best models? I hear some rat's do the hair metal thing, which is not what I'm after.

Also, I have a '69, Skinpimp mk3, and OCD for dirt right now.. hehe just because I know there is a good chance it'll be asked!

Thanks!

They all do the hair metal thing if you turn the gain up. You probably want something from the mid-90s or earlier, though.

The ProCo stuff is not too hot?
So, are you looking for a clone?

I'm pretty sure a rep from Proco has said that 'Woodcutter' was just the nickname of one of the guys who worked at the factory. He found it funny that the woodcutter versions were considered to have any extra mojo!

Pre-mid 90s will get you the LM308 (USA). The newer chinese models do sound different but can be dialled in to sound similar.

Just get the current Whiteface Rat Reissue. You'll never regret it as you can coax tonnes of different tones from it.

Yeah, but he could buy the actual Rat that Frisell uses for a third of the price?!

Thanks guys...

So I now know I am looking for the LM308 (USA) version.

I went to the Rat site and checked out the history..

Are you guys talking about the model named 'Rat 2' made from 88-present?

Thanks again..

Every time I've seen Frisell he's been using a RAT II, so unless he had it stolen or lost it's probably a US-made RAT II. Easy enough to find used for way less than a clone or a whiteface RI. Bare in mind that he also uses a Tubescreamer these days too.
