David Eden - The Metro

This is my first solid bass amp as a part time bassist.

What do you guys think of this rig?

So far i am impressed.....what a little powerhouse for 2x10's and a horn!

One channel is a tube preamp, the other is a ss preamp, it seems very well built too.

It says "960 watts" written on the back!

I played one for many years and it never let me down and always sounded great. had an extension cab for outdoor stuff and it worked great.

The 960 watts on the back is power consumption, NOT power output.

it's funny, i *just* played the metro as a backline at a gig last weekend. hadn't seen one in years.

the metro was all the rage back in the day, along with the swr redhead, promising buckets of power in a "reasonably lightweight" package. when it came out it was something every bass player dreamed of on christmas eve. hot stuff.

it's still quite loved, but i'll be honest. i'm not a big fan because:
- it's underpowered/small as a standalone unit - 300 watts into a 2x10 @8 ohms usually isn't enough for me except for the smallest gigs.
- it has dispersion issues, especially with the speakers so close to the floor. and tilting it or lifting it higher really isn't a viable option.
- it weighs ~75lbs or so, but feels much, much, much heavier. especially after a long gig.
- the 2x10 eden cab that matches it is a pretty heavy beast as well, so gigging seriously with it meant lugging a two-piece rig that weighed well over 100lbs.
- the sound is very eden, which for me, is dated.
- after being the cool kid on the block for years, the company went completely downhill. not sure what the most recent status is, but as a result they lost the market. if i were gigging with it i'd make sure parts/repairs for that model weren't an issue.

the micro head/neo market pretty much made this "monster modern amp combo" format obsolete. but if you bought it for reasonably cheap, you're not gigging frequently or live in a house with an easy load-in/out, and the metro's in good shape, then congrats!

(i absolutely detested it at gig last weekend though. sorry to be the voice of dissent here!)

Set it on top of a 4 ohm 4x10 Eden Cab and call it loud.

The amp will run at 2 ohms. I used one of these for years. It's a great amp. If I still had one I would take out the two factory speakers and install two 8 ohm NEO speakers. That would lighten the load prolly a good 20 pounds. Then I'd keep my eyes peeled for a 4 ohm NEO 2x10. Now you are talking 750 watts into four 10's. Bang!

Thanks folks!

I bought for a song and it probably won't leave my house very often....mine had issues with the casters (now solved).

I am actually thinking of installing much larger casters for ease of movement and raising the height a few inches....since i have a minivan and ramps it should be very easy to roll around with the large casters.

Oh yes, i was kidding about the 960 watts (it is consumption) but this Eden does deliver 600 watts into 2 ohms.

Anyone have a preference for an extension cabinet with the Eden Metro?

750 watts into 2 ohms, 500 into 4 ohms, 300 into 8 ohms.

Now imagine swapping the facory speakers for a set of 8 ohm each (4 ohm total) NEO speakers. That turns the combo into a 500 watt thumper.

Think two of these.

Those Delta Lights are 4.5 pounds each. The speaker in the combo are probably 20 pounds each. The unit would get way lighter and way more solid sounding.

You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Good idea Red Planet!

I wonder if the cabinet is all MDF?

I actually thought about making a separate head box, that would lighten the load even more and i could still use the cabinet.
