I completely agree with all 3 of your statements, especially about Chamberlin. Mike Byrne is great, but part of the appeal of the Pumpkins to me has always been that slightly jazzy feel behind these rock drums that bore into your skull. Byrne's drumming, while excellent, is more straight ahead. You can even hear it when he plays Chamberlin's old parts live, which he does well, but not the "same".

Even though they're using the same SP name, it's hard to think of this band as the Pumpkins. In my mind, it's Corgan's new band, and it rocks regardless of name. The new album is really really solid, especially Quasar as an opener. There are a few moments where Oceania gets a bit too Zwan-ish or synth-y for my tastes, but otherwise I'm really liking it.

You and several of the reviews I've read have said the same thing, so it isn't just you. I noticed it as well. They just cloaked it in a different rhythm.

Doesn't bother me, though, as the song overall is much different from Cherub Rock.

I think we all like Chamberlin a lot. But Byrnes sound really suits the band. I think the world should just accept the new Pumpkins and move on.

Sure, I wasn't suggesting that I don't "accept" the new Pumpkins (whatever that would entail), just that Chamberlin has a certain dimension as a drummer that Byrne doesn't. You can clearly make the same claim in the opposite direction too; like I said above, I really like both Byrne and the new album.

The more and more I listen to it, I love how there are a million and one guitar tones on that record and they all fit in the context they're given. That's an awesome accomplishment! Love the sounds and 'feel' of this record a lot... After listening for two weeks straight it's become one of my favorite Pumpkin albums.

Right now if you asked me I'd probably go:
Siamese Dream
Gish
Oceania

I just felt that Mellon Collie had too much filler. Adore was too down and Machina was just getting back on track. Then I don't even recognize Zeitgeist. It was like their St. Anger in my eyes.

I've never been a Pumpkins fan, but Corgan was on NPR yesterday and he had some really interesting things to say. Hearing him talk about hit records, etc, really drove home how profoundly different the music scene is today than it was back then (almost 20 years ago! yipe).

Yes, he's a very bright guy and usually has interesting, thoughtful points to make.

Really surprised how good this is given that Zeitgeist was truly awful.

^ yeah, they played some clips of the new LP, and it sounded a heck of a lot better than anything else they'd done post-"..."Dream"

Hmmm I didn't think Zeitgeist was all that bad???

Anyway The new album is amazing, and has been in constant rotation since I picked it up upon its release.

What I like about most pumpkins albums is how they grow on you, there is just so much going on in these songs.

I'm not sure who is actually producing these records (or this record in particular) but I would have to imagine its Corgan (Giving his controlling reputation). With that said the guy to me is in the same likes as Brain May or Jimmy Page as far as how to layer tracks and guitar parts so seamlessly! Only upon repeated listens and carefully listening can you really dissect just how much is going on!

I think the album is killer best stuff in awhile though I did like the billy corgan solo album. I really feel this is the natural extension of that........but that was the extension of the pumpkins so same thing really. digging violent rays and the whole drum thing in oceania!!! definitely some nods to earlier material, I think thats a good thing as most people are not familiar with it today, also it drives home the fact that Billy is allowed to play like himself even know the old pumpkins are over.
