If you are playing match play it is part of the game. And you have to understand there is psychology behind it. Maybe HE isn't a good short putter and wants to establish "gimmes" early on. Or maybe he wants to get you used to not having to hole out until a knee knocker on 17 with the match on the line and suddenly he isn't moving to give it to you. Whatever. Match play is a different animal.

If it isn't match play they have no reason to touch your ball. Period.

A stranger doing that is just wrong. And 2.5 feet is way too far away for a gimme. Rule of thumb is the length of the shaft on your irons.

I don't like gimme putts. Doing things right, making the short putts, keeps me in the flow of my game and I build confidence as I progress through the round. I get the casual/social part of the game too and sometimes I just go through the motions when I'm playing with friends/family that play that way. I use those rounds to practice things on the course I wouldn't usually do. Take a stab at the hero shots I wouldn't normally try. That said I tend to play my best when I am alone, no distractions, no gimme putts. Just me on the course playing true and sticking to the rules. Always score the lowest rounds when I am alone.
