Can't believe nobody mentioned Motown songs. James Jamerson was the man!
And i'm not even a bassist... ![]() Probably a lot more fun playing Motown than bass in most rock songs. |

Just about anything from early 80s dancehall/reggae.

I think really the best place to start is with songs she actually wants to learn. If she's like most teenage girls, she's probably into dance and pop music. Find out what songs she likes and maybe do a simple transcription for her. Most pop on the radio today has straight forward basslines that would be good for a beginner. If nothing else, just transcribe the basic chord progression and have her play the root notes. |

A bass line that EVERYONE knows, that is also pretty easy, is "Another One Bites the Dust".

I think the Rolling Stones' "Happy" is a one note bass line that Keef overdubbed. Probably the simplest one if not in the top 3 of recorded popular music.

Looking at your sig, Id have her play some Christian pop. Something that she could maybe use are church. Maybe some Chris Tomlin stuff. Our God is not too hard and may be something on her radar if she is into Christian pop.

I myself am learning to play bass. The first songs I learned are Planet earth by Duran Duran. Also Beat It by Michael Jackson.

Paul McCartney Jet!
Tom Petty Free Falling, Won't Back Down, the whole Full Moon Fever album is great study not only for bass parts, but also for seeing how the bass parts never conflict with the vocals. Rocky Mountain Way Joe Walsh! Sunshine Of Your Love Cream :-) Hey Joe Jimi Hendrix Most of this stuff took me 5 minutes to nail from memory. The first album I learned note for note at age 14 with no lessons was Sgt Peppers. The second was Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced & Cream's Debut album. Jethro Tull Aqualung, note for note at age 15. You can do this!

Others had some good suggestions. Here are mine...
The Temptations' "My Girl" is pretty fun and easy for a classic Motown tune. "Hot N Cold" (Katy Perry) is easy for a modern pop song. Most modern pop songs are very easy, bass-wise. There's no imagination happening there, sadly... "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" is an easy classic metal song (basically F# the whole song except for a few turnarounds). I think "More Human Than Human" might be the easiest bass song in history. Tripper |
