I'd disagree. I really like the RC and I think the EJ was truly an original and functional design on Don's part. But the NOS feels great and with the vintage tint to the neck, it has a look that is classic and timeless while the headstock gives it that "Grosh" touch. I don't consider that a step backwards.

Grosh is a guy who made his name with original takes on classic designs. The first VT & RC guitars were familiar, yet unique. The Singlecut was a killer guitar, unique from the ground up. The Electrajet was the same way.
And now... he's making a strat copy. Pardon me for being totally bored, but hey, some guys need that strat shape to feel comfortable. Look, I've been there, I have a Suhr Classic cause I wanted a better Fender, Fender. But innovative, nah, I think not. If you think the couple centimeters difference in body contours of an RC vs. this NOS is going to have a perceptible impact on tone, you're kidding yourself. |

Well, then Don Grosh is kidding himself because he certainly believes there is a perceptible impact on tone...

You might think it is a step backwards and you are entitled to that opinion. I understand it, honestly. Don has been getting asked for this for a very long time from both end users AND dealers. They wanted a Grosh option in what they offered their customers in a more ahem "Traditional" guitar but with Grosh quality. That is what the NOS Retro offers them. Don is not turning away from what he has already done with the NOS Retro. He decided to do it and it has turned out terrific, IMO. I love my Retro Classic, my Bent Top Custom and my Set Neck. I love the vision Don has brought to those guitars. As a matter of fact, that is one of the reasons why I am such a fan of Don's work. My next Grosh will be an ElectraJet. I dig it.

From what I read, the RC has a swimming pool route much like my fender American Strat of the 90's. That and the mentioned modern truss rod makes it a neck heavy guitar with a resonant lite (sort of) semi hollow body. Supposedly the NOS has a lighter neck with the older style truss, and a more solid (heavy) body. I personally think the resonance comes from the neck 95% of the time, and I don't like the aesthetics of a open cavity with plastic over it.
It looks like most of the NOS, especially on FAt Sound, are shipping with light weight alder and rosewood boards. My only question is how the ash and maple/maple or alder and maple/maple compares... I think the fiesta red looks incredible... I want to see the shoreline as well.

I am continuing to bond with my one week old Grosh NOS Retro Custom. Ash/Maple. It is a stunning guitar! I cannot compare it to a Retro Classic since I haven't played one. But I can tell you the NOS Retro is an amazing guitar and sooooo resonant. Last night I was jamming and knocking on the body and listening to the guitar sustain and harmonics respond to knocking on the body. Just amaaaaazing!

Here is an impromptu video I shot of my buddy John checking out my Grosh NOS Retro Custom a couple nights ago. Shot this on my Droid Razr Maxx Cell phone, so forgive the jittery video. I bought a Louis Electric Buster amp and my buddy liked it so much, he bought one too! (Call Cliff at Destroy All Guitars. Superb service!)

My NOS is on order with Grosh, thru Mass Street Music. It is a HSS configuration with his Fat60's Singles, and a Small Block 327 Bridge. Going swamp ash with a natural finish, Brazilian board, tortoise guard, and black knobs/controls. I have a 2007 Grosh Hollow Carve Top T with 1 11/16th nut and 12" radius. I love it and ordered same for my NOS. It will be a 4-5 month wait, but well worth it. |
