I have had a Tascam 2488 for the last 7 years. It allows you to record up to 8 tracks at a time, and supports 24 tracks to mix through faders. 24 bit recording sounds great and you can burn cds right off it.

These units and the newer versions (2488 neo) are bargain buys thrugh ebay and Craigslist (less than $400), just be sure to take a good look at fadars and buttons for wear. I highly reccomend the dvd tutorial. If you get it i would be happy to point you to additional web based learning resources for this.

That was my first thought too.

Sorry, but you are crazy to record on a cassette when digital recording is now so cheap and pervasive. I took another look at the ZOOM R-16 and it is impressive. At just $399 it records to SIMM cards, up the 32 GB. And when its full you just dump the files to your computer. Its all USB 2.0 compatible.

It has 8 pre-amp inputs and you can cascade units. It also comes with Cubase LE so you can use it as a digital interface for mixing in the box.

Considering that when I got Protools LE in 2002 I ended up having to build a customized computer for about $1000 just for performance specs (I copied the hardware specs of a professional audio computer maker that charged about $2400/unit) - and I paid $800 for a separate standalone Digi 002 mixer, this new unit seems 10 times easier and cheaper.

I may buy one just for the fun of it. Watch the video. The only drawback is that I don't know much about Cubase, but it may work with Reaper. I think I may be done with ProTools - it has gotten way too bloated.

Here is a sound-on-sound review of the unit, says it works with any DAW:
