When you touch the strings you are now connected to the ground of the guitar and acting as a large shield, hence the hum goes away. Thanks Bill. They do look like humbuckers but I thought I would ask in case they were some kind of single coil design. I'm sorry to report that in this district, I am the local tech! When he has enough time to get it on the workbench, I will let you know. I'm sure it's a quick fix.
