Determining the age of a Marshall amp
I have a Marshall 50-watt head. I would like to know how old it is. The serial number has been scratched off, so I cannot research it that way. Is there any way to narrow-down its age by appearance? I think it's 1973 or thereabouts. I bought it used in 1977, so I know it's at least that old.

PCB or a tag board? That'd narrow it down a bit. If the cab is original, you could also narrow it down from the cab style.

Amp pics
I posted three photos on Flickr. Link in my original post. If you need more, I can be more specific.
Thanks. http://www.flickr.com/photos/2581259...7628445279595/ |

Got any photos of the inside of the amp with the circuitboard? Definitely pre '75 due to the small logo on the cab. Maybe some of the Marshall experts can date it from the outside but I can't.

Who the hell would scratch off the serial number, possibly stolen. Doesn't really matter, you had it this long.

1970 or 71 most likely, judging by the framed choke and small box. More concerning than the year is the clearly non original mains transformer.

You should put more pictures (gut shots included) to precisely determine its age. Mains could be original but without bell covers.. it's hard to see it from those pictures. Great amp!

Added photos
I added a few more photos. I was able to take the innards out and give you a full view.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/2581259...7628445279595/ As for the serial number, I had no idea it was even scraped off until recently, when I decided to sell it and wanted to research the age. (duh) One of those things that just completely escaped me. I don't remember how much it cost, but it must have been a great bargain. Any ideas on its worth now? There is no back plate. I've seen back plates on Ebay for $165, but I don't know if it would be worth replacing. Would like to sell it as-is. Thanks for all your input. |

I endorse Laura & Valve Queen tubes, you should too. Marshall, Gibson, Fender, Charvel/Jackson. Dave Friedman of RACK SYSTEMS is a genius. After the Firebird "X", i'm quite convinced Henry Juszkiewicz is crazy. |

The brown circuit board says probably 1970, and it's a 1987 model number, for lead guitar.
