I'd say you can change the character of the distortion (assuming you are talking about a distorted guitar tone) by tweeking the upper mids and highs, maybe some subtle compression.
It's not really changing it, more like filtering what is heard, or not heard. |

Yes, but you'd better do it in rehearsal. My guitar player recently got a distortion pedal so he could avoid having to change channels on his amp ( short footswitch cables). He set it up playing by himself. First gig with it, first song, voila Bass guitar disappeared.

recording has already been done, so the tweaking has to happen in the mixdown...tracks cut great with the upper mids...maybe some lower mids and a touch of bottom to bring it together?

Also try re-amping/plugin through a distroto-box with smooth characteristics and low gain. I often effect a particular range of freq space with different effects/plugs. But I use Adobe Audition, don't know of any other DAW that does that--maybe RX?
