You don't hear much about Tony Joe White

...Which is a shame, because he's an outstanding singer, songwriter and guitarist - a true triple-threat musician. He can play anything from slow soul to ripping swamp-country-blues, and he does it all with a superb sense of style and restraint. I've always thought he was the one person who could grunt on record and not sound like an idiot, and the one person who can make an amplifier sound like it's melting while still playing clean tones.

Amazing what you can accomplish with an E7 chord and a righteous groove. Tony Joe also wrote one of my favorite songs ever, Rainy Night In Georgia.

Rory also covered one of his tunes. I dig this update on it.

I always liked this version of a song he wrote and played for Tina Turner:

Maybe he's counting the royalties he's got off of Tina Turner for Steamy Windows and hasn't had time to do anything else?

More likely the royalties from "Rainy night in Georgia".

Word.

As much as I love Creedence, they were essentially "borrowing" the whole southern swamp thing, lock, stock, and gumbo barrel. I don't think the Fogerty boys chased down many Hoodoos while growing up in Berkeley, California.
