Pick two speakers... What works for you?

Here is th scenario... A 2x12 open back cab... Will be used for a variety of classic blues and roots based rock projects. Which two?

Brittish made greenback
Celestion g12h30
EVM-12L
JBL K-120
Tone Tubby red alnico

All are broken in and sound great. Which 2?

if weight isn't an issue, 2 ev. if you have two, i'd pair the two that r of equal sensitivty/loudness.

The Jensen mods would fill this bill nicely. Quite possibly the best bang for the buck out there.

Oh wait, this is TGP. Many here mistakenly equate $$ for quality and wouldn't stoop to the level of buying something less expensive.

Sorry, my bad.

Two of the JBLs. Might get a little "hissy" on the top-end when loud, but that's what the treble control is for.

Thanks guys... I'm thinking of blending these, i only have one of each available at the moment. Looking for a couple of proven combinations to try.

When mixing speakers there are two things to consider. First is SPL or sound pressure level. This is a measurement in decibels when one watt of power is put to the speaker measured at one meter. If you have a large gap in the SPL of each speaker, the one with the higher SPL is the only one you'll hear. Try to keep it within one db. Another one, and this is frequently overlooked, is the resonant frequency. If there is a large variation between the two, no harm, no foul. If they match it's also no problem. If they're slightly off you run into the possibility of getting an unwanted oscillation that can sound like a chorus pedal when none is in the effects loop/chain. This is rare but it needs to be considered. If it's just off a tiny bit it can grate on yer nerves when you play a note close to that frequency. Also consider that a note played @ 60Hz also has waves at other like Hz. So 120, 180, 30 and so on are there as well.
Don't let my post count fool you. I've been playing this game longer than many here have been alive.

Definitely the EVM and either the JBL or the Tone Tubby.

I have heard a few good pairs of speakers before but it can also cause problems for micing the cab unless you have two mics.

I used to run a Vin 30 and Classic Lead 80 pair that sounded great together.
But when micing it didn't sound as good out of the PA because we would have to choose which speaker to mic.

Now I just use a 212 with two EVM 12L's in it.
Problem solved for sound but my back hates that cab.

Tim Schroeder (in Chicago, Schroeder Audio, DB7 amp, Nels Cline etc)
has great ears and settled on this combo for his cabs:

Two different 12" Weber speakers—an alnico Blue Dog and a ceramic Silver Bell that are each rated at 50 watts.

I have played through his amp and cab and can heartily recommend all of the above.

His DB7 head might not be every ones taste, but the cab is pretty cool and the speaker combo would work in a variety of cabs and makes a lot of sense to me.

You can read a review of it in Premier Guitar. I am not affiliated with Tim or his company in any way, just a happy client).

How can we make these choices without knowing what amp you're using?

well, he did give style of music. and we all know speakers are almost about as important as the amp (if not equal). for classic tones i've heard great things about the Greenback(G12M)/G12H mix. never heard them together, but have separately. right now i'm using a WGS Reaper (G12H style). if you use Celestion then this mix will only give you a 50W cab and there will be a sensitivity balance issue. but Scumback makes versions of these that will work together, and at various watt ratings: the M75/H75 mix, which gets many raves. WGS has versions of these too for about half the cost.

I have a Dr Z RT66 and recently picked up a Carr Hammerhead 212 cabinet with that exact combination, Vin 30, Classic Lead 80. Interesting point you make about which speaker to mic. I'll probably temporarily wire each speaker to a separate jack, put the back on and listen to each one individually.

Lol... I hear you, but I'm in a rediculously state of amp switching with Fender, Marshall and drZ heads.
