So, the car insurance company wants $8,000 a year to insure my daughter

She's on our family policy now for about $150 a month. I asked about getting her her own policy instead and it's over $4,000 for 6 months. She's 19 and has had a minor accident and two tickets, the most recent was over 18 months ago.

I'll just keep her on our policy. I'm wondering what kind of crack they're smoking to quote that much.

Minor accident and two tickets? That actually sounds like a good reason. Consider the amount of time driving and the number of points. Driving is not a right, it is a privilege.

Not uncommon, I'm in the car/finance biz and rates are crazy high for young people without dings. Considering she will soon be on her own this would probably be a good time to sit her down and explain this will be an ongoing thing if she gets more tickets. Three years clean is the magic number.

I realize that but not many 19 year olds can spare $8,000 a year.

It's Florida. Every time I drive down there, I think I'm going to get in an accident and I've had a perfect driving record for 30+ years. You guys have it all: seniors driving 45MPH on the interstate, unlicensed illegals in POS cars with 7 people in them driving 80+ and maniacs in lifted trucks and GXRs passing them all. No offense, but driving in LA is like heaven by comparison.

I dont think that is even a consideration, it is not a matter of what you can spend but rather how much of a risk you are.

that said, 8k sounds outrageously high to me, even with accidents. Shop around I am sure you can find a better deal than even the 150/mo you pay now.

It's not that bad. The old people from Michigan that come down here from the winter are the worst. They're slow, their cars are huge and they don't know where they're going.

I'd still sit her down and explain that the high rate is a consequence of a bad driving record combined with her young age. If you give her the impression she is a victim of the insurance industry and that you are willing to bail her out consider the message you are sending her.

Brutal! But she's going to need 36 months to get those tickets off her record before the rates drop.

I forgot about them. We have a couple renting our house right now. Nice folks, but you're right: they are crappy drivers...

What choice do I have? She doesn't have that kind of money.

That is very often very true. When you are with 1 company too long, you can lose touch with what the going rates are. Can't hurt to just look.

BTW, you are not alone. My 17 yr 11 month old daughter totalled my car recently

Ouch.

Dude explained it that they have about 30 risk categories. As a family, we're number 3 from the best. On the family plan, she benefits from that category. On her own, she's in the mid-20s somewhere. I'll make some calls, but I'm not too optimistic.
