maintenance question

My son has a cheap little epiphone guitar. Hasn't plated it for some time. Do I need to cut the strings off or loosen them?

Loosen them before you cut.

Will he ever plate it in the future? That's an important consideration, since plating can get pretty expensive, especially gold plating...

Was he plating this guitar up as his main entre or was he just toying around with it as a side dish?
I know some players who can serve up a mean soul dish on an Epiphone.

I would leave the strings on. (but loosen them)
You'll never know when is a good time to pick up the epi and start palying again. Without strings, this guitar will be in storage for a long time.
Just my 2 cts worth.

apparently the q. is how to store a guitar & the answer is to leave the strings on & tuned to pitch as they are designed to have tension on the neck

thanks for ur enquiry - ur custom is valuable to us

Leave them on you can tune them down a tiny bit but they need to be on there to keep the neck straight.

I am constantly amazed at the number of folks who want to loosen strings on a guitar for storage, airline flight, shipping et cetera!! Unless your guitar is a 1833 Martin or similar fragile antique, leave the guitar at standard string tension.

Playing guitar with the strings off always helps when practicing soft dynamics.
