SRV and Hendrix not so similiar

Ok I thought about this while listening to BOG Live at the Fillmore. (maybe the greatest live record ever) I hear a lot of people say how SRV and hendrix's playing are so much alike. I feel that hendrix's playing is a lot funkier and more groove oriented. Even his leads have a rhythmesque quality to them. Whereas SRV is definatly the overpowering lead guy. I really like SRV's early stuff from the late 70's when he was playing with a full band. Now i am a fan of both but SRV's originals never did much for me. Whereas hendrix was a great writer and with composer as well as a player. SRV is the master technician and hendrix was the ultimate sonic artist. This is my opinion and i am by no means trying to knock anybody its justy something i think is interesting.

For the most part I agree with you.

SRV was heavily influenced by Hendrix but certainly did his own thing with it. He channels Jimi great with his version of Voodoo Child (Slight Return), but you can appreciate the very Texas-blues style in it too.

I like to think SRV was one of the best at picking up where Jimi left off. Both gone too soon of course.

Hendrix and SRV are miles apart with Jimi far ahead.

I think of them as two completely different players.

SRV had influences from Jimi, amongst others. But who doesn't?

For me, SRV was and still is my favourite blues player. The power just baffles me. I think he had a lot to say.

Jimi was an innovator.

I respect them both very much, and enjoy the vast majority of their work.

I can't really compare... a Texas Blues player to a West Coast/Chitlins/UK influenced one.... not really the same at all. Although I get why you would with Stevie paying such homage to one of his idols.

Stevie was soo much better at certain things...
Jimi was sooo much better at other things.
It's like comparing a world class beer to a world class wine...
depends on what you are in the mood for.

I agree about not comparing the two. One was a very good performer of his chosen style of music. The other widened the gateway to a universe far beyond blues guitar - a universe of sound as well as playing approaches - so influential on a diverse range of players from John Frusciante to Adrian Belew to Stanley Jordan to Vernon Reid... the list just goes on and on.

To me hendrix was a great songwriter. Guitar playing for th sake of making wierd noises or wanking etc etc bores the crap out of me. I like great songs. SRV and guys like him to me are great inspiration for the sake of learning technique and all that, but then i prefer to take what i've learned and use it in less of a guitar for guitar's sake thing and more of a way to support the song. So to me hendrix was great because thats exactly what he did. His live playing however, tho interesting for the same reason i found SRV interesting, i felt was wanking. And even more than SRV because it involved a lot more senseless noises and all that.

You probably think it's odd hearing that from a guitar player. And I AM one who also is guilty of that crap to some degree. But I try to put my playing into a place where it helps make the song stronger and become part of it instead of trying to make my playing the focus. SRV did too, but he also spent a lot more time wanking endlessly as did hendrix live. But jimi wrote some classic and amazing songs with playing that 100% was supportive or and part and parcel of a great song. It was like his writing and playing and everything were crafted with one thing in mind...making a great song. If i weren't a guitar player i'd never listen to SRV. I DID listen to and love jimi's stuff B4 i was a player.

So i guess in my own way i'm agreeing with you in some respects if not all.

I also don't think Marino or Trower sound like King James. Influenced? Yes. Copycats? No.

I love both of those guys and see no reason to start comparing them. The Hendrix influence was a part of Stevie's music and stage clothing... and it was done with love and respect.
