Went to the store the other day to buy food for my two children. They said that will be $125. I said I didn't have $125 but I have EXPOSURE! You know what? They didn't give me the food! DON"T PLAY FOR FREE PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to know a guy with a very good juggling act. Someone came up to him and said "hey I would love it if you could come to my party and do your act. I can't afford to pay you but it would be good exposure." His response was "yes, it would be good exposure to many people who love to have me come do my act at their parties, for which they couldn't pay me but it would be good exposure..."
That said, I've played for free in some places if there was some other benefit for me in it. A couple weeks ago I did a 50 minute solo set in exchange for a $20 food/bar tab. Played the set, had a few drinks and a snack, met some nice people, went home.

So where in the original posting is the refusal to pay mentioned? I don't mean in the title of the repost.
How many bands looking for initial exposure have played for free at parties? I'd think playing in a restaurant would be a step up from a backyard party. If you don't need the exposure, don't take the gig. Or talk to the owner and tell him the first one is for free or for dinner on the house for the band and their families, and charge the next time. Maybe we should consider that this restaurant is trying to integrate live music as an experiment. Live music is dying in many areas. If it is successful, they should expect to pay for the popular bands. If I had a band that would be appropriate, I would play the gig, collect what was placed in the tip jar, sell CD's, and thank the owner for the opportunity. I might only do it once though, to help the venue get on its feet.

Got to agree. If you want to play for free, play for free.
But recognize that free gigs are seldom a stepping stone to paying gigs (the "exposure myth"), and that by giving it away you are undercutting your brothers who are working at doing this for real. Your actions have consequences. If you can live with that, more power to you.
