Any love for Surplus Bolt Actions?

Since the pub is already littered with gun threads, why not another?

I have an old 1917 enfeild 30-06 I use for hunting, mounted with a scope and the stock has been cut down by my grandfather, unfortuantely no pictures, but it is a great gun, shoots straight, robust, takes any ammo you throw at it, and has properly filled freezers for over 50 years (my grand father bought it in the late 50s). I wish I had a picture.

Recently picked up a mosin, I was going to scope it like a socut rifle, but I am having too much fun with the open sights, I think I am going to leave it as is, I added a recoil pad, not for the recoil but for the extra length, Ruskies must have been short dudes.

I am looking into maybe picking up a mauser at some point, there is just something about these old bolt actions that is just timeless.

I have been pondering getting into collecting them. But then I'd have to get a new gun safe...

I had an old Mosin many years ago. It was a beast. And I could almost hit the side of a barn with it.

A good friend on mine has a German Mauser chambered in 8x57. It shoots great.

lol. I love the way you have to sight these in with a punch by drifting the front sight, so low tech. But I have this one shooting nice groups at 50 yards and I can hit a 2 ft diameter steel plate at 200 yards 3 out of 5 rounds. For open sights you can complain.

My dad brought back a Japanese Arisaka 6.5mm rifle from the Pacific war. I cleaned it up a little in the 80's and I now shoot it fairly regularly. It's a nice rifle. I would like to have a Mauser though.

Me. The one thing (hopefully) i could be accused of collecting. I have an 03-A3 Springfield, a Mauser, SMLE, 1917 US Enfield and the prize of my 'collection' such as it is, a .30-40 Krag that shoots better than all but one of my AR-15s.

b.

Those are all on my list, well we have the Enfield, but I would like an unmolested one.

Eric, those rifles were made from things like old furniture and melted down iron sewer pipe. They didn't make them short because the Russians are small, but because shorter guns take less raw materials.

FYI - If you get more than one, you have what's known as Mosinitis.

I think it was more about the Russian winter than the mfg. process!

I've had quite a number of rifles and while I enjoy the newer stuff, probably my favorite is a Lee Enfield. I just love everything about those rifles.

Old pic is old, but that middle one... awesome!

Are these the guns you can typically pick up at places like Big 5 or Dick's on the cheap?

I got mine at Big R a local farm and ranch store for 75 bucks on black friday, typically they are around 100-129 dollars. Aimsurplus has them for 79.

Yugoslav M48BO (no markings, possibly for the Egyptians) Bought brand new about 10 years ago. Soaked in cosmoline. I didn't think I'd ever get it all out.

And lower, bcd marked K.98k. Matching except for the bolt. To bad too because it's in very good condition.

Thanks Eric. I always see the sporting goods store adds selling these guns. I figured they were commie death traps and I'd blow the side of my face off if I tried to shoot one.
