Gordie Howe's dementia fight personal and public

Story Highlights
Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, 83, will do fundraisers for dementia research

Howe, who lost his wife to Pick's Disease, suffers from episodes of confusion

His physical condition has improved; "He's still Mr. Hockey," says son Murray

Gordie Howe, with son Marty (left) in Ottawa during NHL All-Star Weekend, has a mild form of dementia that gets worse at night.

"Get's worse at night" - my parents both have alzhiemer's and the sundowning hours are unimaginably difficult around here.

Best of luck to you Mr. Howe and family.

This came out today:

"Just to set things straight Gordie does not have dementia," Marty Howe said as he was driving with his dad from Kamloops, British Columbia, to Vancouver for a press conference Thursday afternoon. "He has had a cognitive problem for 7 or 8 years that causes mostly short-term memory loss. If he had dementia we would be lucky to have him with us."

Still, Mr. Hockey is getting up there. Had the pleasure of meeting him a few times when I used to do some work with the Red Wings Alumni Association, such a nice guy and a class act.

I really feel for you. Thanks to hospital screw-ups my mother is left with ' chemically induced dimentia ' - not alzheimer's but no walk in the park, either. Any time you need support, PM me.
