It's about the person's ability to play the part well and the ability of the crowd to hear the part played (i.e. your sound engineer's ability to mix the guitars well enough).

uh...Im not the Guitar Nazi..."you have strat??...NO SOLO FOR YOU!!!"
Im also not talking about dictating what players play...for me it was something we just fell into...I used to bring my les paul and strat to practice, I never used my strat because the lead guy used a strat and the over all sound to us was better with this...he had his "lane" and I had my "lane"...

the solo is only 30 second out of a 3 1/2 minute song, generally...the lead guy does play rhythm as well...and regardless of what guitar we play, we dont step all over each other...we either play different voicings that combined sound good, or play riffs on different positions on the neck...so a strat and a les paul BOTH playing rhythm sounds great, better to me than to strats or 2 les pauls...

and...I refer to myself as a thythm player, but 90% of the time I shared leads...I did simpler leads, and riffs...it still sounded better with me on a les paul and the other guy on a strat...it was easier to stay in our respective lanes

again...no one mentioned the guitar nazi approach

I typically play a PRS Custom 22...sometimes I substitute that for a Custom 24 or a Les Paul or a Baker B1.
Our other guitarist mostly plays his Strat, but also has a Rockabilly style Hollowbody Ibanez, and a Custom 24 PRS.

We both play lead/rhythm.

Our rhythm guitarist plays a G&L Strat, and I almost always use P90's, which were not offered as an option for some reason, or humbuckers. I use a Strat for two songs a night, and my Rick 330-12 for at least 6-7 songs.
