Good 'ol TGP to the rescue. Had an old but pretty cream colored Mexican strat sitting in closet for 15 years. Being a humbucker guy I never had the ambition to deal with the extremely thin tone. Saw this thread and decided to invest in the Jeff Beck set from Terry. I put them in and the thin sound was still there. Downloaded a strat schematic and low and behold the damn thing had been wired wrong from the factory and had 500k pots! Bridge tone pot was wired ass backwards and cap was only wired to only one tone pot. Fixed the wiring and there it was, incredible thick juicy strat tone just like Terry said it would be. 250k pots on order.
Next up: Peavey Reactor Tele with Terry's Blues set. Very happy with this guys stuff. Tom C |

I saw this thread awhile back & ended up talking with Terry about his Tele Pups. He does a Vintage set that I bought (at that price why not!!!!!) I replaced my Kinman Broadcasters with Kerry's Vitage Tele set. I LOVE my Kinman's but after using Kerry's pups the Kinman's are going up for sale! The pups are simply fantastic! Crisp, meaty, twangy, the neck pup is SWEET!
There aren't enough adjectives to describe how much I like these things. I just finished ordering a set of Humbuckers from him. Told him what I like in a humbucker tone, he made his recomendation & i went for it. The buckers cost a little more then a Tele set ($155.00) but in comparison to my Kinman humbuckers the Kerry set is less then just 1 Kinman lol. He's using Alnico IV magnets in these pups. I personally haven't come across many buckers that use Alnico IV so I'm stoked. I'll report back once I've tried them out.

I didn't know the dude makes humbuckers.
Where did you see information about his humbuckers? On the ebay page I went to all it had was a list of different single coil sets. They looked like decent products and going by what you guys are saying here they sound like they are definitely great sounding pickups at a very reasonable price. I would be interested in learning more about his humbucker sets. I just put in a Dimarzio "Super Distortion" in my Epi LP Plus Top amber guitar and it sounds really cool, way different than the stock bridge pickup Epiphone put in there at the factory. It was about a hundred dollars for the nickel covered version though and about seventy for the black open coil one. I was thinking of putting a black open coil Super Distortion in my burgundy Hwy One strat, along with a black or dark colored patterened pickguard. I would definitely consider buying a hand wound humbucker though, if this guy makes one that would interest me. I'm pretty much done with ordering pickups from GFS because I have never been overwhelmed with the results that I have gotten from their pickups. I always have wished that I spent the few extra dollars and gotten a premium set with a well established record of consistent high quality performance. Sounds like this guy turned out to be a real good pickup maker after all. Any info on his humbuckers would be highly appreciated.

getting a Scero strat built to John Mayer Black1 specs and Louis called Kerry up and told him what i wanted, John Mayer's sound on 'Continuum' and Kerry said he knew EXACTLY what I wanted with the sound, kind of a smooth, scooped thing going on with a really articulate attack and good dynamics...as mentioned before, he said it before i could get the description out of my mouth. REALLY sounded like he knew what he a was doing. I'll put a demo up here when I get my strat so we can get an idea of the sound out of these bad boys. May not be a true representation, and since I have to record it with the built in camera on my mac it will not be great quality, but something's better than nothing, right?

No, he is pretty fast. Just give him the day to respond. Mmm.. humbuckers.....
I've had my eyes on some Lollar Imperials but the reviews seem to be a bit mixed especially on the low winds. Maybe a bit muddy? Probably depends on the guitar. I favor the used PRS McCarty pups but I'm ready for a change. Still stuck in the Larry Carlton/Robbin Ford thing. I would be interested in hearing reports on Terry's humbuckers also... |

The best for sure
I have nothing to gain here, other than hoping the best for Kerry.
I been building Fender style Relics for years and have tried them all. I won't mention the names of the expensive hand wound guys, but I'm sure you who they are. Kerry's pickup are by far the best deal going. I have purchased at least 30 sets and have been floored each time a test a new guitar. The vintage Tele pups have outrageous tone. I have also used the Strats which are equally impressive. I recent did a Micawber clone for a guy and the balance between the bridge pickup and the PAF was the best I have seen. Kerry has also worked up a couple of sets to my specifications which I use frequently with rave reviews from my customers. This guy has it figured out. Better grab em before the whole world finds out. |

I got a set of vintage spec singles made with NOS wire from the 50's (43 AWG). Neck and mid read 5.85k DC and bridge 6.15k with a base plate. Because of the #43 wire they're actually on the lower output side (which is new to me). I have just over an hour on them at low(er) volume so far but I can say they definitely have touch sensitivity like nothing I have tried (including Duncan Texas Hot Antiquities and Van Zandt Blues). They do lack bass punch and that's goin gto take some getting used to, but there is more "feel" for lack of a better term. I used Jimmy Vaughan wiring and added a Callaham blend pot so my options are kind of different. So far they're very refined and a WHOLE LOT quieter than the Duncans (for 60 Hz anyway). It's a whole new guitar, that's for sure! I'll have to see if I can live with the lower output. The 2 & 4 positions sound a little unusual. Maybe it's because I'm used to more mids (with strats I go for a SRV thing most of the time). I do not miss the RWRP in the least. It's almost refreshing to have the same level of noise in each position. Anyway, I'm glad I got on the bandwagon, especially for the price. Kerry could be very much up-and-coming.

hmmm are these specs standard or did you specify them? e.g. 43 wire, addition of base plate etc
Kerry just recommended the A4 set, but not sure if he's doing anything different based on what we chatted about. |

No these were his specs, the pickups were already made. He was copying one of his nicest sounding pickups using this wire so I'm confident they're something special. I think the novelty was just in how old the wire is! There is an article by Kinman which says the aging of insulation contributes to the "vintage" sound way more than magnets aging. If I can find it, I'll post the link. I added the base plate.

I have sent two emails through ebay (7/9 and 7/16) and I have not heard back from him. I'm not feeling the love.
Does anybody know what the differeces are between the 69 set of strat pups and the Hendrix set besides the reverse winding of the Hendrix set? dj |
