Attenuator for %13

Gigs change and my %13 FTR 37 has become too powerful for the venues that I play at (yes even at half power mode). Yes I know that Fred advises not to use attenuation with his amps, but it is my choice, right? I just love the amp and dont want to have to "down-size" especially not knowing when the venues will change again. The speaker output configuration is a little tricky with two outputs each going to separate speakers (using matching cab).

So, you % 13 users, what attenuators are you using? If you are using them, what configuration do you have them in (which ohm output/s to which speaker/s)?

Thanks,
Jared

Fred's caution is baseless unless he uses cheap parts that can't handle being pushed. As long as you use a *quality* (aka close impedance tolerances) unit, using an attenuator is no different than simply pushing the amp hard without one. Anyone that says otherwise is full of beans.

I don't play a %13, but I HIGHLY recommend the Rivera RockCrusher.

When I spoke to Fred a few years ago he didn't advise usibv an attenuator because he felt it negatively effected the tone. At this point in time he said he preferred a variance.

I've used both a THD Hotplate and Aracom with GREAT success with my LDW 17/39. Zero problems. I'd recommend the Aracom for sure! (Hot Plate is good too - but, Aracom is much more transparent!)

That said - I really don't need one at all with the LDW as it has a great master volume. But, I do enjoy her with the power tube overdrive!

I have 2 Aracoms. One for my /13 MJL and one for my Z-wreck. I have had the MJL for quite some time and tried a lot of attenuators, but the Aracom is by far the best I have tried. One of the Aracoms I bought came from a guy that had it and a Faustine and preferred the Aracom. It also has 2 speaker outs and adjustable input and output impedance. Very handy for going from 1/2 to full power without having to move the speaker cables.

my two cents,

Keith Riel
