Guitar Shops in California

Hey everyone,

Hey All,

So I live in Las Vegas at the moment and am looking to buy a good Martin acoustic that I can keep for a long time. I'm looking along the lines of an OM21 or similar guitar. Something that's an all around good workhorse that I can use for strumming, flatpicking, slapping, tuning down and anything else really. I'm doing this because I'm selling off a lot of my stuff in order to have one great thing I can keep for myself for a while (strange to buy something in order to not have to spend in the future I know, haha).

Anyway, the guitar shops in town have a pretty limited selection as far as Martins go. The only ones in town that I know of are Guitar Center, Sam Ash, Cowtown Guitars and AJ Music and Vintage Instruments. Guitar Center has a pretty limited selection as far as $1.5K+ Martins go and don't have very many OMs in stock at all. Both Sam Ash and Cowtown are pretty shady as far as I'm concerned and I'd rather not give them my business...and AJ's is great but doesn't really have what I'm looking for (super small shop). Anyway, I'm looking to making a trip to California some time and picking one up there. Are there any good shops that you guys frequent in Cali that would have a good selection of Martins or Taylors in the $1.5K-$2.5K price range?

IF...I were to pay that much for a guitar, I really want to make sure that it's something that can retain its value and that I keep for a long time. I'd hate to have buyers remorse over something that costly. Thanks for any help peoples.

Westwood Music in Los Angeles is the place to go for Martins. They get some really nice acoustics and the staff is really cool. You should also check out Trutone and Norman's Rare Guitars if you have to time.

California Vintage Guitar in Van Nuys has some nice Martins as well. If you're visiting in person, it's not far from Norman's, be a good one-two punch for Martin looking. And not too far from McCabes, Westwood, and Truetone, which are all in relatively the same general part of town. McCabes is a great store for acoustic instruments in general.

Gryphon in Palo Alto has had some really nice Martins in the past. Give them a call for availability.

I don't know if McCabes (in Santa Monica) still carries new Martins, but they will definitely have some guitars worth looking at. They carry some of the "R. Taylor" guitars that are made by Taylor, but are done in a completely separate building, with each one put together by one of five craftsmen. I have an older ('67) D35 and a Taylor 814ce, but I came really close to picking up one of the R.Taylors and letting one of the other two go (and I don't play that much acoustic).

And by the way, if you're going to be in CA, you might as well drive down to the San Diego area and check out the Taylor factory tour (Carvin's got a factory tour and store down there as well). I don't know if Suhr's got a factory tour, but he's out there between LA and San Diego as well.

Fyi, Carvin does have a store but no factory tour in San Diego. Found that out after hauling the family there one day.

Sylvan Music in Santa Cruz. Great collection of vintage Martins, plus the whole line of Santa Cruz guitars. I worked there about 10 years ago for a while.

Ended up going and buying from Greyson's Tune Town in Glendale, CA. Nice bunch of folks, and got an okay deal on a Martin OM-21. $1,800 total, which is alright for a new one!
