I would think that a builder should be prepared to offer the guitar in the case that the buyer prefers. It's really no different than meeting the rest of their needs and wants with the guitar itself.

Give 'em what they want and let them know what it will cost them.

I use good gig bags for gigging. Hardshell is too heavy to be worth it for me.

If I was on tour, or had someone else handling my guitar I'd consider a flight case.

To me hardshell cases are overkill.

Too many chances for screw ups for gig bags for practice and gigging. YMMV

Expect a good case for a good guitar. However, for day to day running around my local area, I use a good hard foam gig bag. (Shaped like a retangular case, absolutely bulletproof, and very light!)

Most builders will offer a form fitted hard case. for a custom build you spent a couple of $K on then its worth it to pay the couple hundred for an extremely well protecting case.

Would love the option for a high-quality gig-bag. I have WAY too many cases, and am much more likely to use a gig-bag.

Didn't vote, as I think that this should be a decision for the individual buyer. It is also possible that the builder may know that the guitar is too delicate to withstand shipping in a gigbag and may insist on a high-quailty case.

+1 on this. I use leather bags by Glenn Cronkhite.

What hardshell guitar cases are you referring too? I don't find any of mine that heavy. Now amp flight cases I do find really heavy.

To the original question, for a customer guitar I would expect a nice case to be provided and it to a hard case. I would be very disappointed if the guitar came in a gig bag. In general as you step up with production guitars, the nicer ones come with a hard case.

Steve Andersen's $7500 archtops come in a custom gig bag ...
