General 10" thread

Hi.

recently I tried a Mesa boogie 4x10 open back cab.
Jensen P10R i think.

First Impression: I doesn´t really matter where you stand, you always get the same sound. Very good. Could be handy on stage.

Second Impression: Very deep dry bass. tonk. goes deeper than my 2x12s
unbelievabe cleans.

Third: very unpleasant philishave-raspy overdrive. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzpfffgh.
??

Is all that common 10" behavior? is the raspiness due to them not yet broken in?
what are your experiences?

several people claim that the reissue jensen speakers are poor and that they sound harsh.
Try another 10" - a weber or a eminence

I've got a pair of the jensen p10q's in an 2x10 cab I run with a 68 bassman and it sounds awesome. Lush, but with definition. What head are you using?

Check out a Dr.Z 4x10....
It's open back and each speaker handles 70 watts each for a total of 280 and is wired for 4 ohms.
Very responsive and in a bar or club it really spreads the sound.
They cost $650.00 and are a GREAT Cabinet.

I've just gotten in the new 10" speaker that I had Weber recreate from an old Celestion 10" Pre Rola Greenback. I will get some mp3 files posted of it as soon as the "So Cal" heatwave passes and I can record without the A/C blowing in the room. Probably going to be later in the week till that happens.

As for your question, alot of the Jensen speakers (now made in Italy) have some scratchiness, and shrill tonal responses to them. I hear the majority of guitar players don't care for their overdrive tone, or with any appreciable gain. The last one I tried (from the Italy plant) was 2.5 years ago and it was a 10" Alnico. It sounded OK, but I didn't put it through it's paces myself, as it was a client's request to install. He liked it real well, paired with a G12M Greenback.

Keep playing it, maybe it will improve a little.

I would be interested in hearing some more about this 10" as I am in the market for a good 10" to go in my Vox AD30VT. Been looking at the Eminence Ramrod or the Celestion G10.

Hi morgan,

I use a VHT 50 cl.

Not exactly vintage gear, but can be dialed in to be very smooth.

My intention with 10" would be:

more upper mids
fast response
and less booooominess. I play a semiacoustic, there´s plenty of bass when distortion kicks in.

and less weight!

I´d like to try a light 410 cab with Jensen Neo10s, but the results with the mesa cab didn´t really encourage me…

I got a VibroKing with 3 Jensen P10r's recently and IMHO the speakers are crap. You get thin, scratchy cone breakup when the amp is set on 3. I think one of the Jensen's is blown out already without having used any boost, just playing with strats.

I put 2 Ragin Cajuns in the bottom and I waiting on a Weber Alnico Blue for the top position of 3.

How good does that 105 sound under high gain? Is it mostly an American sounding speaker? I am really looking for a British sound myself.

Handles hi-gain well - bit darker w/ more girth than many 10" designs. I'd say it's somewhere between a US and UK tone...
