Andy Timmons does entire Sgt Pepper amazingly well
I bought this on iTunes yesterday. I never would have thought someone could cover this album with one pass of fairly distorted guitar with bass and drums, but he does a great job of it.
Occasionally I miss some harmonic support, (like Joe Pass Virtuoso when he takes single note solos and you have to imagine the changes) but mostly just brilliant and satisfying. Even the animal sounds at the end of Good Morning and the dissonant build up in Day in the Life. My only quibble is I wish I could reach in and scoop out 2 or 3dB of 300 hz on the guitar tone to increase the clarity, but it doesn't keep me from enjoying it. Well done A.T.!!

I'm not much of an AT fan. Tend to find his approach to instrumental rock very obvious and his playing (though very skilled) mostly sounds like an assemblage of other players, even down to the tones he goes after.
That said, I had a listen to this record and really quite liked. The interpretations are interesting, the playing is great, and the tunes are a cut above what he's rolled with before. I'd chop out some of that muzzy low end too. I'm guessing he really wants to fill out the trio format and REALLY likes Eric Johnson. Didn't stop me enjoying the record though. |
