Why is getting into/maintaining a band so difficult..(rant)

I just spent the last 3 weeks cramming for a local band. Had 30 songs to learn for a gig and busted my ass, using every possible spare moment in an otherwise very busy schedule to work on their music. (covers btw). Spent money on gear and rehearsal studio time then pulled it together to good reviews at my first gig with them this last week.

Just got a call from the singer today. He's decided to shelve the band to work on originals.
I don't fault the guy for wanting to do his own thing, but he put this band together and he picked all the music. He was expecting some kind of great turnout for the band on a Wednesday night in an area they're not played before.
I find it frustrating that this all is happening on his whim.

Don't think I'll have that kind of time to work on music for a band for quite a while and not really sure I'll really be motivated to do so after this experience.

Rant over...

Take and lead the band now, you have everything in place.

Good time for you to become The Man.

Sorry to hear. Musicians are notorious for being flaky and unreliable, in general.

Of course, there are plenty of exceptions...and those tend to be the ones who are the most "successful", however you define that.

It's no different than any organization, it has to have a clearly defined goal; a "mission statement" if you will, and everyone has to be moving towards that goal and if that's the case then I think it stands a chance...otherwise forget it. Like someone's signature on TGP says: "ain't no way to keep a band together..."

It's like anything where people are involved. The only one you can control is the one you live inside of. I like the idea of taking over the band, unless they're all on board with Mr Flakey.

Richard,

That totally sucks. I know how much work you put into this project based on another thread of yours I read and talking to you via PM. Is the lead singer using any of the other band members? What about auditioning for a lead vocalist with the rest of the band?

Anyway......if you need to talk, just give me a buzz!

That hasn't been my experience in the past. Approx 50% of folks don't show up to an audition. Maybe half of those who do can't play for poop. The ones who play have drug issues and/or don't know how to compromise. Hell, I got about 1/2 of my early bass gigs simply because the last guy fell off the face of the earth.

At my 9 to 5, I've been there 11 years, only call in sick once every 2-3 years......nothing like my band experiences.

You bought gear AND paid for studio rehearsal time?

One born every minute I suppose.

Next time wait and see what happens for a month or two.

At the very least it was a learning experience for you. Just be sure you learn from it.

Well mediocre is average or ordinary so most people would have to be mediocre. It's like most people like to think they have an IQ of over 100 but 100 is set by the intelligence of average humans.
In a world of geniuses the average IQ would still be 100, by definition.
Being an average genius would be called mediocre.
