Civil War muff suggestions...Whats your favorite?

My favorite muff tone is the Russian civil war muff...

As of now i have a early V1 Musket Fuzz even though i do like this pedals sounds I'm considering letting it go..

The reason for this is real simple I'm a less is more type guy ..I know for many the ability to tweak there Fuzz tone is the major draw of the musket fuzz..

For me i prefer the simplicity of 2 or 3 knob pedals or simply the least amount of knobs and switches to get the job done..

Since i do not use a ton of pedals and have space available I'm thinking of just finding a original Civil War muff to go along with my Crest Audio Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face...

Another I'm considering is the Stomp Under Foot Civil War muff...

What are some other Civil War based Muffs i should consider ?

hey bro, check out this thread, it's about the Mojo Hand Colossus, it's a super versatile Russian muff with a mids knob, but it's actually really really simple to dial in good sounds, as just about every logical setting sounds good

they really only run around $150 new, steal if you ask me
there's a video and sound sample:

The SUF and Wren and Cuff Box of War look really great (the BOW especially, that first part of the PGS clip is mind blowing). The Colossus, as mentioned earlier, is a really nice sounding pedal too and you get the mid-boost which is nice and the voicing switch could be useful depending on what you're running. That might make it a bit more complex than you want it to be though. My plan for a Civil War Muff is getting a clone from Blakemore Effects with a mid-boost and a tone bypass switch. Should be pretty tasty...

My plan would be to cough up for a used box of war. There are a bunch on TGP emporium. I like the asthetics of a large pedal though, so I'm not going for the tetris-pedalboard-real-estate game. PS I thought the Muskett was crap. PPS Think twice before gambling on a vintage Sovtek. They truly are impossible to work on--made like crap.

You will get alot of various opinions on this subject such as brand A is hands down the best CWM vs brand B.

From my own expeience and simplicity and price point, the Stomp Under Foot Civil War and Violet Rams Head will be two Big Muffs that will cover the most tonal spectrum and sought after sounds of all the BMP variants.

Skreddy pedals are very versaitile and also are outstanding examples of BMP variants, ie: Rams Head, Triangle etc.

Both builders offer excellant builds and customer service.

This is what I love about TGP, I came on here to research muffs as it's gonna be my next pedal purchase. Mission accomplished, now I just gotta figure out which one I want. That colossus is pretty damn sweet. Now I gotta here the rest.

Call me shallow but I like the fact that Andy plays a lot of G&L's in his clips.

I'm liking the colossus, the Blakemore, and the C&W BOW. Although I'm not sure in what order.

I had to watch the PGS clip for the W&C Phat Phuk just to hear Andy say it and see if he kept a straight face. Turns out they did do something a tad comical with the issue at the beginning and end.

First of all, thanks! Just to point something out though, if you're talking about my Deus Ex Machina fuzz, that's actually not based on the Civil War Muff. OMTerria was going to have me do a custom job for him. The Deus Ex Machina fuzz that I build actually has its roots in the IC Big Muff instead. Just wanted to make sure that was all clear. Thanks again though!

This is the exact reason i was asking for other suggestions...Back in the day 25 years ago i use to travel with three different Russian muffs because they where so fragile...

Back then Ron Sound and a guy in Chicago who's name i can't remember would re box Russian muffs to get some longevity and reliability out of them...
Of course back then the Civil war and big box Russian muff's cost like $40 bucks...
This was back when there was very few boutique or custom pedal builders..
You had a choice between Dallas Arbiter,Vox,Fender and EHX anything other than that was rare...

As far as the Musket fuzz goes i feel it sounded pretty good but i think in reality that it is made more for heavier music or more modern music then i play..
I can find settings that work but i have to search for them which is why i think a simpler more vintage type Muff would be more to my liking...

This explains my initial impressions of the BOW, it's nice but I think it's a little too dark for me.

What clips of the Box of War are you listening to? I've never heard one, but I just hear people speak very highly of the Wren & Cuff pedals. I need to check one out some day.

Here ya go, I just listened to it again. I think it grew on me. I hate these decisions.

Man I must have been tired last night, I got Mr. Blakemore and his pedal confused with the BOW, and on more than one occasion.

Sorry about that. Your pedal Deus Ex muff sounds awesome. How different would a custom one be from a this one based on a civil war clone with a bright switch and blend knob like the one you already build?

In my opinion it already has to be as versatile as it gets. What else do ya need?
